HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Looking to build on the best start in school history, the IUPUI women's soccer team will head east for a pair of tough matches as the Jaguars will face Marshall on Friday night (Sept. 2) before then playing at VMI on Sunday (Sept. 4).
IUPUI (3-1) already has wins over Valparaiso, Indiana State and Marian to start the year and has outscored its four opponents, 13-5. More impressive is how the Jaguars have shared the wealth in the season's early going as
Hayley Shelton,
Catherine Raster and
Tori Minnich all have three goals and sophomore
Maryna Clark ranks among the national leaders with four assists. Head Coach
Chris Johnson's team has seven different goal scorers and 13 different players with at least a point already this season.
Raster, Minnich and
Krissy Kirkhoff have the Jags' three game-winners so far this season.
Shelton was named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week this past week after totaling three goals and an assist in the Jags' victories over Marian and Indiana State. Shelton went her first 31 career games without tallying, but has netted three scores in the Jaguars' last two contests.
In goal, junior netminder
Catherine Schmidt owns a 1.33 goals against average and 17 saves in her four starts. Freshman
Sophia Lipka made her IUPUI debut in the waning minutes of the win over Marian and owns a perfect goals against average in 22-plus minutes.
In the defensive third,
Becca Spitalniak,
Maddie Riedford and
Leia Peterman have been stalwarts and are the top three field players in terms of minutes played.Â
QUOTABLE
"The movement off the ball was the best I've seen it all season. We were switching the ball around the back, opening up gaps and we just played the ball where it needed to be and that helped us get in the back of the net." -- Shelton said after the 8-0 win over Marian.   Â
SCOUTING MARSHALL (1-2 overall, 0-0 home)
Jordan Sackaris leads Marshall with three goals while Sydney Arnold has the team's three assists. For the season, Marshall has been outscored 6-3 overall with the Herd's lone victory coming over Longwood (1-0).
Defensively, Emily Moreland has played every minute in goal and has a 2.00 goals against average with a .571 save percentage.
SCOUTING VMI (2-1 overall, 1-1 home)
Blake Cashin leads VMI with three goals while Emma Quirk has a goal and three assists in three games. VMI has outscored foes 8-2 overall, fueled by wins over South Carolina State (1-0) and Hampton (7-0).
Defensively, VMI has allowed just two scores, both coming in a 2-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky.
INSIDE THE SERIES
IUPUI is 0-3 all-time against Marshall and Sunday's match is the first-ever meeting between the Jaguars and VMI.
