INDIANAPOLIS - Butler freshman Lewis Suddick played a role in all four goals, including tallying three times as the host Bulldogs outlasted the Jaguars in a 4-2 marathon at the Butler Bowl on Tuesday night (Aug. 30). The game featured a pair of weather delays and much of the second half was played in a driving rain storm.
Butler (1-0-1) took advantage of a missed clearance in the game's early going to take the early lead as all Head Coach
Brian Barnett could do was pull his gray Nike polo up over his mouth in disbelief. Sophomore goalie
Josh Gray ranged far to his left to track a ball outside the penalty area, but mishit his clearance, leaving an empty net. Suddick settled the ball and angled a shot inside the left post for the game's first goal and the first of his collegiate career. Gray hung his head and motioned an apology to his teammates after a less than desirable start.Â
Suddick was far from through though.
IUPUI (0-2) returned the favor on a similar missed clearance for the first score of the 2016 season in the game's 27th minute. Senior
Cristian Soto sent a corner kick in the direction of the far post where a Butler defender was unable to clean up the opportunity. Junior
Jordan Parron was well positioned and rifled a shot into the upper left-hand corner past Butler goalie Eric Dick. However, Butler regained the momentum and lead in the 34th minute on a gorgeous combination from Suddick to Bennett Kim. Suddick carried the ball up the right-hand side and drove a cross into the middle of the Jaguars' penalty area. Kim was on the receiving end and redirected a header back inside the near post for a 2-1 lead.
Moments later, the skies opened and lightning in the area halted play just before halftime.
Once play resumed, Soto just missed knotting the score when he drove a shot off the far post in the 42nd minute. Having beaten the goalie on the play, the senior midfielder was unlucky when his attempt pinged the left post and bounded back on the playing field. Freshman
Alan Aguilar had the rebound come to his feet, but sailed his attempt high of target.
After an abbreviated halftime break, the second stanza began in a complete downpour as IUPUI drew first blood in the 56th minute. Freshman
Pedro Valladao centered a pass to
Uriel Macias, who beat a defender before unloading a shot past a diving keeper for his ninth career score.
The success was short-lived though as Suddick struck again in the 57th minute. This time, he beat a defender 1-v-1 and slotted a shot past Gray, who was charging hard off his back line. He completed the hat trick and thwarted any IUPUI threat in the 77th minute when he scored from in close.
With Suddick and David Goldsmith leading the charge, Butler outshot the Jaguars 22-7 overall and 11-3 on frame. Macias had a pair of shot attempts for the Jaguars while Gray collected seven saves on a busy night in net. Dick needed just one save to improve to 1-0-1 on the young season for the Bulldogs.
The Jaguars will return to action on Monday, Sept. 5 when they face Western Michigan at 1:00 p.m. in Kalamazoo. Live stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com at the start of the contest.
