On the court, IUPUI (12-17, 8-6 Summit) is looking to bounce back after a 63-59 loss at North Dakota State last week. The Jaguars have been brilliant at home throughout the season, going 8-1 overall inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
The Jags won the first meeting with South Dakota on Jan. 1, defeating the Coyotes 77-66 on New Year's Day in Vermillion. Junior
Darell Combs led four Jags in double-digits with 19 points, including knocking down 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Matt O'Learyadded 15 points and four assists and
Evan Hall had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and eight boards.
IUPUI's heavy dose of road games has resulted in four losses in the past five games, all coming away from home. The Jags dropped three straight before an emphatic 88-76 home victory over Omaha on Feb. 17.
JAGUAR TIDBITSFULL POWERIUPUI appears as though it should end the season healthy, although that hasn't been the case for much of the season. The Jaguars haven't been full strength since the Jan. 14 win over Denver as Evan Hall and Jordan Pickett have both been sidelined for portions of time since then. IUPUI has only been at full strength 13 times this season as Hall, Pickett and Nick Osborne have all missed time to a variety of injuries.
EIGHT AND COUNTINGIUPUI's eight Summit League wins are the most since the 2010-11 season when the Jaguars finished 12-6 in conference play.
COMEBACK FALLS SHORTIUPUI trailed by as many as 15 at North Dakota State last Thursday night, but got within a single possession in the final minutes. However, IUPUI never fully got over the hump, committing a pair of turnovers in the closing minute in a 63-59 loss. Junior Darell Combs led the way with a game-high 21 points and freshman Evan Hall added 10 points in his first action in over a month.
EASY-EFreshman Evan Hall made an immediate impact on the game at North Dakota State last Saturday, scoring 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in just 10 minutes of work. Hall collected four boards (three offensive) after missing the seven prior games to injury.
FOUL WHOASPersonal fouls played a role in the Jags' four-point loss at NDSU as IUPUI was whistled for 23 fouls, while drawing just eight whistles against NDSU. The disparity of 15 fouls was the second-largest margin the Jags have faced this season, trailing only the 17 (34-17) at NC State in November.
O'LEARY HONOREDIUPUI junior Matt O'Leary was recently voted Academic All-District 5 for his prowess on the court and in the classroom. O'Leary has a 3.81 grade point average while majoring in management in the Kelley School of Business and is now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
He was joined on the District 5 team by Alec Peters (Valpo), Chris Fowler (Central Michigan), Max Hooper (Oakland) and Colby Wollenman (Michigan State).
CLOSE CALLSIUPUI had a recent four-game streak where all four games were decided by two points or less. The Jaguars dropped a 53-51 heartbreaker at Denver on Feb. 4 after squandering a 15-point second half lead.
Prior to that, IUPUI won three straight by a combined five points, two coming on last second buzzer beaters. The Jags won at Fort Wayne (84-82) when Marcellus Barksdale scored on left-handed layup as the final horn sounded.
The Jags then needed a defensive stop on the final play to beat Western Illinois (69-67) and picked off North Dakota State (73-72) on Jordan Pickett's trey with 1.2 seconds remaining.
IUPUI is 4-1 this season in games decided by two points or less, having beaten Indiana State 72-70 in the season opener.
FIRST MEETINGIUPUI opened the new year with a 77-66 win at South Dakota, thanks to a 50 percent shooting effort. Darell Combs led four Jags in double-digits with 19 points (4-6 3's) and Matt O'Leary added 15 points. Evan Hall had 14 points and eight boards and Mason Archie added 10 points.
Tre Burnette had a team-high 18 points for the Yotes, but made just 7-of-18 field goal attempts.
TRANSFERABLE GAINSFour of IUPUI's top five scorers are Division I transfers who sat out last season. The quartet of Darell Combs, Matt O'Leary, Jordan Pickett and Nick Osborne have teamed to score nearly 44 points per game - more than 60 percent of the team's output. Senior Marcellus Barksdale is the team's top returning scorer from a year ago and is scoring 8.7 points per game this year.
BUZZER BEATERSIUPUI now has three buzzer beater game winners in the Gardner-era as sophomore Jordan Pickett is the most recent Jaguar to knock one in, draining a three with 1.2 seconds left to send the Jags to a 73-72 win over North Dakota State.
Senior Marcellus Barksdale was the star of stars at Fort Wayne on Jan. 23 with a game-winning layup as the horn sounded.
Last season, P.J. Boutte beat Ball State in overtime with a runner at the horn to give the Jags a 71-69 on Nov. 22, 2014.
MAKE SHOTS - WIN GAMESSimple math tells you that making more shots than your opponents will win games. Those numbers hold true for IUPUI in the two seasons Jason Gardner has been at the helm.
IUPUI is 20-5 (11-0 this season) when shooting a higher percentage from the floor than their opposition while going just 2-33 (1-17 this season) when being outshot by opponents.
92 STRAIGHTSenior swingman Marcellus Barksdale has started 92 straight games for the Jaguars, dating back to the opener of the 2013-14 season. Classmate Mason Archie is second on the active roster, having made 41 career starts.
Barksdale is the program's lone four-year senior and has quietly stacked up some impressive numbers in his IUPUI career. Barksdale, in his fifth year with the program, has accumulated 928 points, 579 boards (10th on all-time list), 269 assists (13th on all-time list) and 157 steals (t-9th on all-time list with Matt Crenshaw, two ahead of George Hill).
Barksdale is a distant 72 points shy of finishing as the 23rd member of IUPUI's 1,000 Point Club.
PERFECT AT HOME IN THE NON-CONFERENCEIUPUI finished the home portion of the non-conference slate with a perfect mark this season, going 3-0 in those contests. It marks IUPUI's first perfect non-conference slate since the 2010-11 season when the Jaguars had just two non-conference home games (IU-Northwest & IU-East).
IN LEAGUE PLAYIUPUI has been extremely balanced in Summit League games with five players averaging at least nine points per game. Combs leads the crew at 14.7 points per game, followed by the trio of O'Leary, Pickett and Barksdale at 10.4 points per game.
IUPUI also has six guys with at least 17 assists in league play, but none with more than 25 total dimes.
MORE LEAGUE TIDBITSIn Summit League play, three of IUPUI's top six scorers are shooting 50 percent or better from the field... Nick Osborne (52.6%), Matt O'Leary (50.4%) and Evan Hall (55.9%)... O'Leary leads the team in rebounds (85) and is tied for the team lead in assists (25).
ODELL TO THE HALLFormer standout Odell Bradley was formally inducted in the IUPUI Hall of Fame earlier this season. The 2004 Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American was recognized at halftime of the Denver game.
Bradley, a Nashville, Tenn.-native, averaged 23.1 points and 8.5 boards per game his senior season, including two games of at least 41 points against Oral Roberts.
SMART CATSWith fall semester grades recently posted, four Jaguars earned Academic Advisor's List with a 3.0 GPA or better - Marcellus Barksdale, Aaron Brennan, Matt O'Leary and Noah Thomas. O'Leary, a management major, topped the bunch with a 3.93 GPA during the fall.
