TULSA, Okla. - IUPUI's losing streak hit three on Thursday night (Feb. 11) as the Jaguars fell at Oral Roberts, 77-56. ORU (12-14, 4-8 Summit) used an early 18-0 run to roar past the Jags, who dropped their third straight Summit League road game.
Obi Emegano collected his first career double-double with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds and Albert Owens chipped in 13 points and seven boards for the Golden Eagles. Junior
Matt O'Leary, who was voted Academic All-District earlier in the day, had a team-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting in the loss.
Classmate
Nick Osborne finished with a double-double off the IUPUI bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
"You can't give up big runs like that and expect to win games," IUPUI Head Coach
Jason Gardner said. "They came out with a lot more energy than we did in the beginning and we didn't match their energy. Offensively, I thought we missed a lot of shots that we normally make. We just need to get back in the gym, get some shots up and get feeling good about ourselves.
"I think it'll be good for us to get home, get back in our routine and get back to doing the things we were doing a couple weeks ago."
The game was tied at 5-5 early after
Marcellus Barksdale made a rare three, but IUPUI didn't score again for more than six minutes, allowing the hosts to reel off 18 straight. Emegano and Owens combined to score 15 of the team's 18 points during the run and the Golden Eagles essentially never looked back in snapping their own five-game losing streak. The Jaguars never got closer than 12 the rest of the night and the Golden Eagles had immediate answers to any IUPUI mini-runs.
IUPUI (11-16, 7-5) was held under 60 points and 40 percent shooting for the third straight game, hitting just 37.1 percent overall and 29 percent from three on Thursday.
Turnovers were the problem early as ORU converted eight first half miscues into 11 points. The second half saw the Jags continue to struggle shooting the basketball, making just 12-of-33 attempts, many from point blank range.
"We got good shots and had the right people taking the shots," Gardner said. "Sometimes, you just have nights when shots don't go down and you have to rely on your defense to pick you up."
Junior
Darell Combs had 12 points and two assists in the loss and Barksdale closed with nine points and six rebounds and surpassed 900 career points in the process. He also increased his career rebound total to 566 and is just two boards shy of moving into the top 10 on the program's all-time list.
ORU defeated IUPUI for the tenth straight time and swept the season series with the Jaguars by virtue of Thursday's victory. It was the Golden Eagles tenth straight win over the Jaguars inside the Mabee Center and Gardner fell to 0-5 lifetime against ORU.
