INDIANAPOLIS – In their final game before the regular season, the Jaguars controlled visiting St. Joseph's College from the start, rolling to an 87-74 win. IUPUI jumped out to a lead in the first minute of the game and never looked back, led by 14 points each from
Darell Combs and
Ron Patterson.
The Jaguars were in attack mode on offense all night, and used the up-tempo play right from the tip. They drew fouls at will and capitalized by shooting 26-of-32 (81.3%) from the stripe. However, the speed of the game led to some sloppy execution at times, resulting in 26 turnovers on the night. The Jags still found ways to be effective, which Head Coach
Jason Gardner took notice of.
"I thought (we) did a good job breaking the press and getting some good looks out of the press and staying in attack mode," Gardner said, "and I think St. Joe's did a great job as far as giving us a great look. They made us rush a little bit, they caused some turnovers, but I think it's good for us to see when we go back to the film and use it as a learning experience."
Combs was one of the players that handled the ball against the St. Joseph's press, and he knows that the Jags are capable of cleaning up their game.
"We struggled tonight more than usual. We usually don't have this many turnovers in practice, but it was just one of those nights," Combs said after the game. "I'm not comfortable with the way we played tonight, I don't think anyone in the locker room is happy, and I feel like we are capable of playing much better."
Even though St. Joseph's scored 74 points, the Jaguars still had a solid showing on defense. The Pumas only shot 31.3 percent from the field, and the Jags outrebounded them 51-26.
At the other end, IUPUI shot better than 50 percent and outscored the Pumas 40-14 in the paint.
The Jaguars got contributions from almost everyone on the roster and showed some depth that Coach Gardner is encouraged by moving forward.
"I definitely think it helps us. I think we can have some small lineups, some big lineups, and I think it makes us deeper," Gardner stated, "It was good to see, and I think we just have to watch the video and figure out how to put it all together."
The Jags had 10 players on the roster in the scoring column and eight players that scored at least eight points. Sophomore
Evan Hall scored all eight of his points in the second half to go along with seven boards.
Matt O'Leary,
T.J. Henderson,
Kellon Thomas,
Josh James and
Aaron Brennan each also chipped in eight points.
The Jaguars go on the road to Eastern Kentucky on November 11th for the season opener. That game will be heard on iHeartRadio as Morgan Adcock (pxp) calls the action from Richmond, Ky..
