MARQUETTE BLITZES JAGUARS IN 2K CLASSIC, 104-79

Host Golden Eagles shoot a scorching 57 percent from the floor

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - A year removed from an overtime loss at Marquette, the IUPUI basketball team had upset on its mind when it headed north to cap off the 2016 2K Classic inside BMO Harris Bradley Center on Tuesday night (Nov. 22). However, it was the host Golden Eagles that had an early Thanksgiving feast against the Jaguars, rolling to a 104-79 victory in front of 11,552 fans.

Marquette (3-2) shot a blistering 57.1 percent from the field and 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from three-point range to coast to the home win. Haanif Cheatham led five Golden Eagles in double-digits with a game-high 22 points while Katin Reinhardt scored 16, 13 coming before halftime.

Darell Combs and Ron Patterson led IUPUI (2-3) with 15 points apiece and senior Matt O'Leary had 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the defeat.

"I thought (Marquette) did a good job of getting in the passing lanes and disrupting what we were trying to do offensively," IUPUI Head Coach Jason Gardner said. "Early on, we missed some threes and missed some layups and that kind of gave them some energy. From there, we kind of pressed and put too much energy in the offensive end and didn't defend them well at all.

"Give them credit. They're a good team and they did a good job of spacing us out and making shots. That was the difference in the game."

After a good start, things went off the rails rather quickly for the Jaguars as the defense faltered and the offense slumbered. IUPUI led 14-13 at the 15:05 mark after O'Leary dropped in a layup, but Marquette reeled off 18 of the game's next 21 points, 10 coming at the foul line. Fouls piled up on the Jaguars' big men, resulting in a steady Golden Eagle march to the charity stripe. Marquette cashed in on 16-of-17 first half attempts, outscoring IUPUI 16-4 at the line before the break.

The lead ballooned to 23 before halftime and ultimately the hosts took a 57-37 advantage to the break.

IUPUI, which won the Indianapolis Subregional of the 2K Classic, was never able to make a serious dent in the second half as the verdict was well in hand.

"I don't think we came in overconfident, I just think they were the better team tonight," Gardner said. "We can certainly play better and we will play better, but I thought (Marquette) played really well tonight. They were the hungrier, better team."

Luke Fischer bullied his way to 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting off the Marquette bench and Duane Wilson added 13 points and six assists. Jajuan Johnson rounded out Marquette's double-digit scorers with 11 points, primarily on drives to the bucket.

Sophomore D.J. McCall had his first double-digit scoring game of the 2016-17 season with 10 points and six boards (five offensive) off the IUPUI bench. Junior Aaron Brennan added nine first half points and connected on 4-of-5 field goal attempts.

IUPUI finished at 41 percent overall and 6-of-20 (30 percent) from three-point range.

Marquette scored half of its 104 points in the paint, outscoring the Jags 52-38 inside. The 104 points allowed were the most by an IUPUI team since allowing 105 in double overtime to Oral Roberts on Jan. 24, 2004. It was the most allowed in regulation since yielding 116 at Central Oklahoma on Dec. 18, 1996. With the loss, IUPUI dipped to 0-4 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

IUPUI will continue the long stretch of road games after the Thanksgiving holiday when the Jaguars face SIUE on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1:00 p.m.. That game will be televised on Fox Sports Midwest and broadcast on the OVC Digital Network. In addition, it can be heard in Central Indiana on 97.5 Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app as Morgan Adcock (pxp) is on the call.
