INDIANAPOLIS - Returning to the pool of competition for the first time in over two weeks, the IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams had plenty of positive efforts in dropping their first dual-meet of the 2016-17 season to Cincinnati on Thursday (Nov. 10). The men (3-1) came up just short in a 142-158 loss, while the women (4-1) were topped 106-193. The loss interrupts a flawless start to the season for IUPUI, and serves as the final meet prior to the start of the House of Champions (Nov. 18-20).
As a whole, the men's and women's teams combined to pick up seven events in the pool, in addition to a complete sweep of the diving competitions.
In the men's portion of the one-meter and three-meter springboard events,
Mitch Mastey and
Krisztian Somhegyi put on a show, dueling each other for the top spot in both events. In the one-meter, Mastey proved victorious, besting Somhegyi with a score of 301.35 to 295.05. In the three-meter event, Somhegyi pieced together a convincing victory, logging a score of 357.75. Mastey finished second with a 325.43 score.
On the women's side,
Melissa Berger swept both events, taking first place in the one-meter (268.35) and the three-meter (257.48) events.
Bailey Wills of IUPUI finished second in both events as well, going off for scores of 243.38 (one-meter) and 240.98 (three-meter).
Freshman
Jackson Sandala shined for the Jags, as the Indianapolis-native picked up a victory in the 200-yard Freestyle with a finishing time of 1:41.29. Sandala was also the third leg for the 400-yard Freestyle Relay team, as
Aaron Brysch,
Trenton Wolfe, and
Jared Allen joined their teammate in piecing together a 3:05.01 finish to capture the event. Allen also picked up his own individual event, winning the men's 50 Free with a 20.94 finish in the sprint. Other standout performances including the Jags taking the top three spots in the men's 200 Individual Medley, with
John Ragsdell finishing first with a time of 1:53.61, followed by
Jon Stoller (1:54.61) and
Josh Barajas (1:56.03).
The dynamic-duo of
Maranda Buha and
Mallory Buha combined to pick up the top-two spots in the women's 100 Butterfly, with the elder sister Maranda finishing first (57.46). Mallory was behind her with a 1:00.34 time.
Eline van den Bossche was victorious in the 100 Back, finishing in 58.63.
Carmen Escalante Ruiz just beat out teammate
Rachel Metzger in capturing the 200 Fly, finishing in 2:09.00 time, just 0.37 seconds faster than Metzger.
The Jags will now turn their focus to the House of Champions, set to take place in the Natatorium.
