INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team got a gritty result in a 1-1 draw with No. 23 Omaha on Saturday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The Jags were short-handed in their first Summit League match of 2015, but survived a game where they were outshot 24-4, and 14-1 on frame.Â
"I think the key thing we talked about was being mentally tough," Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "I'm not surprised. I know what these boys can do. They've battled adversity all year long. We had a good gameplan."Â
The Jags entered Saturday night without injured sophomore strikers
Emmanuel Usen and
Uriel Macias. Senior captain
Clint Hoffar didn't play either due to a one-game suspension following a red card in the Jags' last match while a few other IUPUI contributors were sidelined with health concerns as well.Â
IUPUI weathered a storm from the Mavericks early on as senior keeper
Eduardo Cortes saved a trio of Omaha shots on goal in a one-minute span.
The Jags answered with a dangerous attack as freshman
Trevor Semakula got in behind the defense and trapped the ball on the end line. Semakula played his next pass to a slashing
Jacob Singer whose one-timer just missed right of the net around the 20-minute mark.Â
In the 25th minute, the Mavericks' Mark Moulton dribbled the end line and slipped a ball to Logan Mendez at the six. Mendez placed a shot that deflected off an IUPUI defender and past Cortes for the 1-0 lead.Â
The second half was controlled by Omaha until the 78th minute when IUPUI sophomore
Cristian Soto blasted a goal lower right. Freshman
Ryan Machonga found Singer in the box who played the feet of an open Soto near the penalty kick spot for the equalizer.Â
"We just kept fighting until the end," Soto said. "Next thing I know, Jacob (Singer) plays me. I was just composed and put it in the corner."
The Jags were aggressive at times in the first OT but were stifled after an early corner kick. An IUPUI handball just outside the box gave the Jags a scare in the 107th minute. The Mavericks' restart was bounced around before being corralled by Cortes.
Cortes was undoubtedly Saturday's man of the match. The Dallas, Texas native stonewalled Omaha to the tune of 13 saves, none bigger than an acrobatic deflection of an Omaha header in the 103rd minute. Cortes' baker's dozen in goal is tied for sixth-highest in the program's Division I history.Â
"It comes with being a senior," Cortes said. "Sometimes you have to put the team on your back. Today we got a good draw against a very good opponent. I'm really happy with the work ethic that every guy came out with today with injuries and everything we had going against us."Â
"Omaha is a very good team," Coach Jacob said. "That goes to tell you how good the Summit League is right now. It's anybody's league."Â
The Jags will have a week off before facing another conference opponent in No. 12 Denver (Oct. 2) and previously ranked Indiana (Oct. 7). Friday's match at Denver will begin at 9 p.m. ET.Â
