CINCINNATI, Ohio - The IUPUI women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 road decision at Xavier on Friday night (Sept. 11), yielding a pair of second half goals in the road loss. XU's Kenadie Carlson netted the game-winner in the 51st minute and assisted on Samantha Dewey's insurance goal in the 58th minute.
"We played pretty well," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "If we keep progressing like this, we will be very good come conference time."
After a scoreless first half that saw the two sides combine on 21 shot attempts, IUPUI opted to go to the bench in goal for the second 45. Junior
Nicole Kulovitz replaced sophomore
Catherine Schmidt in the second half and was in goal for both scores.
Carlson broke the ice in the 51st, taking a feed from Catherine Allon and placing a shot past Kulovitz. Just less than seven minutes later, Carlson threaded a pass from the right side into traffic, leading to Dewey's fifth score of the season. Kulovitz, who had yielded just one goal all season, had very little chance to make plays on either goal as the Xavier attack found creases in the Jaguars' defense.
IUPUI (2-3-1) had chances, led by
Krissy Kirkhoff's five shot attempts, but never found paydirt.
Schmidt finished with four first half stops while Kulovitz made three after halftime.
IUPUI opened the game on the attack, getting clean looks from both
Tori Minnich and
Alyssa Fox in the first 10 minutes, only to see XU's Rachel Piccus save both. Late in the half,
Kalli Shepler-Tucker put a tester on target and
Denise Veldman had a shot fly high of target in the 41st minute.
Kirkhoff was IUPUI's most dangerous target in the second half, including a good look in the game's 60th minute that
Xavier outshot the Jaguars 23-17 while both teams earned three corner kicks. Both Carlson and Dewey had a team-high four shots on Friday, combining to put five on target.
IUPUI's attack did receive a boost off the bench from junior
Catherine Raster, who came off the bench to attempt three shots in her season debut. Raster's start to the year has been marred by injuries, causing her to miss the season's first five games.
The Jaguars will continue the two-game weekend road swing on Sunday at Evansville in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Live stats will be available via IUPUIJags.com at kickoff.
