JAGS OPEN FALL WITH 1-1 DRAW AT DETROIT

Senior Clint Hoffar tallies his first career goal in the tie

DETROIT - The IUPUI men's soccer team opened the fall season with a 1-1 double overtime tie at Detroit on Friday (Aug. 28), riding a pair of seniors to the outcome. Senior Clint Hoffar scored his first career goal in the 23rd minute and classmate Eduardo Cortes collected four saves in net.

"We came to play soccer today," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "Our defensive third did a good job of keeping the ball and keeping possession. We've never been able to outshoot teams on the road, so for us to come up here and outshoot them shows just how hungry we were. We saw the hunger in our eyes today.

"I'm proud that we were not beaten in the run of play, which was important. We had our opportunities, but their goalkeeper made plays. That's why he's the returning (Defensive) player of the year in their league."

Hoffar, typically the primary deliverer of IUPUI assists throughout his career, was the beneficiary of a Nick Anderson set piece on this occasion. Anderson whipped a corner kick into trouble, allowing Hoffar's header to nestle past UD goalie Nathan Steinwasher.

"Nick hit the corner and I had three guys on me, but once I got up and got on the end of it, I knew it had a chance to go in," Hoffar said. "I knew it would be on frame."

The Jaguars carried a 1-0 lead through an evenly played, physical first half and dominated the run of play to begin the second stanza. After attempting just two first half shots, Jacob's squad went on the offensive, outshooting the Titans 9-0 to start the second half. Michigan-native Ben Thornton just missed on a pair of headers and sophomore Jacob Singer had two attempts denied by Steinwasher, keeping the hosts in the match.

Detroit (0-0-1) closed the one-goal deficit in the 81st minute when Adam Clauss was able to bend a corner kick past Cortes for the equalizer. Cortes got a hand on the ball, but the linesman ruled the ball had crossed the endline for a score.

Given momentum, the Titans peppered Cortes late in regulation, but the veteran came up with a key stop against Tyler Moorman in the 82nd minute to help force overtime.

Neither team was able to unload a shot in overtime and IUPUI had the lone corner kick in extra time in the 107th minute.

"It was a tough game - definitely a lot of battling going on," Hoffar said. "We played really hard and got a result on the road, which is good. We obviously wanted to win, but we got a result."

Singer attempted a game-high five shots, putting three on target, while helping IUPUI to a 16-11 shot advantage. Thornton, a defender, mustered three shots in a full 110 minute effort. Moorman paced Detroit with four shots, putting two on frame.

Friday's tie marked the third straight draw in the series between the two schools and IUPUI has remained unbeaten in the series over the past five meetings.

IUPUI will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 1 when the Jaguars host Butler in a soccer doubleheader at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The women's match will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the men's match at approximately 7:30. Admission is free of charge and open to the public and Tuesday's doubleheader will mark the official start to Youth Soccer Month in the state of Indiana. Those unable to attend can watch both matches on IUPUIJags.com as veteran broadcaster Greg Rakestraw calls the action from high above the pitch.
