EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team posted a 3-1 victory over Evansville on Sunday night (Aug. 23) behind three second half goals in a span of 21 minutes.
"It was really good for us to go on the road and get a result against this Evansville team," Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "We've never beaten them before and it was a great test for us."
The Jags entered the half in a scoreless game but came out hot as freshmen midfielder
Kristian Martinez opened the scoring for the season in the 46th minute. Martinez recovered a loose ball in the box and placed the shot in the bottom right corner just 59 seconds into the second half.
Just seven minutes later, senior
Clint Hoffar launched a throw into the box finding freshman
Ben Thornton for a header and a 2-0 edge in the 53rd minute.
UE fired back in the 67th minute on a goal from Mike Matic, but IUPUI responded just 19 seconds later ('67) as
Jacob Singer found
Emmanuel Usen for a 15-yard strike. The sophomore-to-sophomore connection gave the Jags a 3-1 lead that would hold until the end of regulation.
"It's something we talk about; how we deal with adversity," Jacob said. "Their goal got the crowd back in it and it was good for us to shut the crowd down right away."
The Purple Aces fired 17 shots at IUPUI senior keeper
Eduardo Cortes only to find the net once. The Dallas, Texas native registered a game-high three saves before being replaced by freshman
Josh Gray in goal.
"[Cortes] was impressive as usual," Jacob added. "Josh was great coming in for him. We really just wanted to see how deep we are and how we react in that situation, if we were to need to take [Cortes] out."
IUPUI attempted eight shots on the evening with just three shots on goal, all of which found the net.
"I was most proud of the collective defensive effort," Jacob said. "We have work to do but I was really proud of our guys, especially our bench."
The men's soccer team is now 1-0-1 in exhibition play competition. The Jags will start the regular season as they face Detroit (0-0-1) on the road next Friday (Aug. 28) at 12 p.m. in a match broadcast on ESPN3.
