Photo GalleryINDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team yielded three goals in the opening 35 minutes and never got off the schneid offensively as the Jaguars dropped a 3-0 preseason decision to Ball State on a steamy Saturday night (Aug. 15) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
Ball State, coming off back-to-back 11-win seasons, wasted little time, going in front just 11 minutes in when the Cardinals got a shot past junior goalkeeper
Nicole Kulovitz. IUPUI just missed answering moments later when
Braegan Lyon had a header deflect just over the crossbar from eight yards out.Â
The Cards went ahead 2-0 in the 29th minute on a shot from eight yards out, just inside the left post. The lead grew to 3-0 just before halftime when a Ball State attacker angled a shot past Kulovitz for the final goal of the game.Â
Heading into the east goal, IUPUI settled down in the second half as the play was much more even. The Jaguars' best threat of the second half came off the foot of
Krissy Kirkhoff, who drilled a shot into the stomach of the BSU goalie from 18 yards out.Â
Head Coach
Chris Johnson's squad was missing a slew of starters on Saturday as injuries have piled up over the course of the preseason. Given opportunities, some freshmen took advantage of their college preseason debuts.
"I thought
Jessica Flores played well out there today. She was active and did well with the ball at her feet. I also thought
Becca Spitalniak also had a really nice game. She was really solid and did some good things," Johnson said. "Braegan showed some flashes of some really good stuff. She wasn't as consistent, but showed some really good things."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Catherine Schmidt pitched a shutout in the second half, making five stops.Â
IUPUI will officially open the regular season on Friday night (Aug. 21) when the Jaguars host Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.Â
