INDIANAPOLIS - Coming off the Christmas holiday, the IUPUI basketball team will cap the non-conference slate with possibly its stiffest test to date when the Jaguars face No. 9/12 Butler (10-1) at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Monday night (Dec. 28). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on FS2. In addition, IUPUI fans can follow the action on IUPUIJags.com as Morgan Adcock (pxp) will call the action from courtside at Hinkle.
IUPUI (4-10) will be nearly a week removed from an 84-48 loss at Memphis as the Tigers held the Jaguars to a season-low 25 percent shooting and just 1-of-12 from three-point range. Memphis raced out to a quick 15-2 lead and never looked back, leading the entire second half by 20 or more. Junior
Darell Combs led IUPUI in scoring for the seventh straight time with 15 points and
Matt O'Leary scored all 12 of his points after halftime. Junior
Nick Osborne also asserted himself off the bench with eight points and a career-high 12 boards in just 22 minutes of action.
The Jaguars made just 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) first half shot attempts and ended the game with only six assists.
IUPUI will be playing Butler for just the fifth time in school history, dropping the first four meetings, all at Hinkle. The series began in December 1997 as the Bulldogs collected an 83-44 victory, prior to IUPUI's move to Division I play. The most recent meeting was an 87-55 Butler win on Dec. 5, 2012.
The Jaguars are 0-1 this season against ranked foes, having lost at No. 11/11 Purdue, 80-53 earlier this month. IUPUI is 0-14 all-time against ranked opponents in the program's Division I era (1998-present).
JAGUAR TIDBITS0-FOR-RANKEDÂ Â IUPUI has never defeated a ranked opponent, going 0-14 versus the ranked in the program's Division I era. Below is a listing of those 14 results, 10 of which were true road games.
The Jaguars' average margin of defeat is 19 points per game in the 14 total losses:
  12/13/99 at #2 Arizona L, 41-70
  12/15/01 #20 Ball State L, 81-103

  12/18/04 at #18 Louisville L, 60-80
  11/10/07 at #11 Marquette L, 68-78

  11/12/12 at #5 Michigan L, 54-91
   12/7/15 at #11 Purdue L, 53-80
TOP FOURÂ Â Â IUPUI's top four scorers this season are all Division I transfers who sat out last season. The quartet of Darell Combs, Matt O'Leary, Jordan Pickett and Nick Osborne have teamed to score 43.6 points per game. Senior Marcellus Barksdale is the team's top returning scorer from a year ago and is scoring 7.1 points per game this year.Â
MEMPHIS BLUESÂ Â Â IUPUI had its worst offensive showing of the season in the 84-48 loss at Memphis last week (Dec. 22), shooting just 25 percent from the floor and 1-of-12 (8.3%) from three-point range in the loss. IUPUI scored a season-low 17 first half points in the loss and the 36-point margin was the largest defeat in Head Coach Jason Gardner's two seasons on the sidelines.Â
MEMPHIS TAKEAWAYSÂ Â Â In a game filled with empty trips at Memphis, rebounds were abundant as both Nick Osborne (12 boards) and Evan Hall (8) set new season-highs... senior Marcellus Barksdale grabbed seven boards and in doing so, became the 14th player in school history to surpass 500 career boards in an IUPUI uniform... IUPUI grabbed a season-high 46 boards, but the Jags were still outrebounded 56-46... Hall made his second career start while Osborne came off the bench for the first time all season.
NINE STRAIGHTÂ Â Â Junior guard Darell Combs has scored in double-digits in nine straight games and 12 of the 14 this season. Over the past nine games, he's 53-of-117 (.453) from the floor and 19-of-44 (.432) from deep.Â
NO LEFTOVERSÂ Â Â Even though IUPUI played Butler during the 2012-13 season, there are no current Jaguars that played in that contest. Current IUPUI senior Marcellus Barksdale was redshirted that season and the remaining group of Jags have since either graduated or transferred.Â
PERFECT AT HOME IN THE NON-CONFERENCEÂ Â Â IUPUI finished the home portion of the non-conference slate with a perfect mark this season, going 3-0 in those contests. It marks IUPUI's first perfect non-conference slate since the 2010-11 season when the Jaguars had just two non-conference home games (IU-Northwest & IU-East).Â
HOME COOKINGÂ Â Â In going 3-0 at home this season, IUPUI is averaging 82.0 points per game and shooting 51.2 percent from the floor (85-of-166) in wins over Kentucky State, Miami and Southern Utah.Â
HALL BOUNDÂ Â Â It was recently announced the former basketball standout Odell Bradley will be inducted in the IUPUI Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 16. The 2004 Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American will later be recognized at halftime of that afternoon's game as the Jaguars host Denver at 1:00 p.m. at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.Â
#SCTOP10Â Â Â Junior guard Darell Combs found himself on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 on Dec. 10 after burying a 60-footer at the end of the first half of the loss at Missouri State. Combs' play was the No. 3 play that night.Â
SECOND HALVESÂ Â Â After playing the first halves of games virtually even this year, the IUPUI basketball team has been outscored 567-476 in the second halves and overtime periods this season - which equates to 6.5 points per contest.Â
5,400 MILESÂ Â Â Coming into tonight's game, IUPUI has already logged more than 5,400 travel miles, most of which have been through the air. Eleven of IUPUI's first 14 games have come on the road, including trips to Milwaukee (Marquette), Raleigh, N.C. (NC State), Atlanta (3 games), Muncie (Ball State), Springfield, Mo. (Missouri State), Omaha (Creighton) and Memphis.Â
MAKE SHOTS - WIN GAMESÂ Â Â Simple math tells you that making more shots than your opponents will win games. Those numbers hold true for IUPUI in the two seasons Jason Gardner has been at the helm.Â
IUPUI is 13-5 (4-0 this season) when shooting a higher percentage from the floor than their opposition while going 1-26 (0-10 this season) when being outshot by opponents.Â
SVETE SAYS ADIEUÂ Â Â Sophomore Leo Svete left the program on Dec. 4 and intends on transferring. Svete, a 6-foot-5 guard, appeared in 37 games over two seasons and averaged 4.4 points per game as a freshman in 2014-15. The Granger, Ind.-native scored 14 against Purdue last season in his second collegiate game.Â
WORKING OVERTIMEÂ Â Â In just 45 career games on the IUPUI sidelines, Head Coach Jason Gardner has already taken his team to overtime eight times (2-6 overall), including twice this season.Â
T.J. EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORSÂ Â Â Freshman T.J. Henderson was chosen to the Legends Classic Kennesaw State subregional's All-Tournament Team and was subsequently awarded his first career start against South Alabama last Tuesday (Nov. 24) in game two of that regional. The 6-foot guard averaged 12.0 points and shot 8-of-15 from the floor in the two games at Kennesaw State. Â
77 STRAIGHTÂ Â Â Senior swingman Marcellus Barksdale has started 77 straight games for the Jaguars, dating back to the opener of the 2013-14 season. Classmate Mason Archie is second on the active roster, having made 26 career starts.Â
Barksdale is the program's lone four-year senior and has quietly stacked up some impressive numbers in his IUPUI career. Barksdale, in his fifth year with the program, has accumulated 776 points, 502 boards, 247 assists and 133 steals.
It's not unreasonable to think Barksdale could finish as the 23rd member of IUPUI's 1,000 Point Club, while also landing in the top 10 on the program's all-time list in rebounds and assists.Â
10 HAVE HITÂ Â Â Head Coach Jason Gardner knew he'd have more weaponry this season as evidenced by the sheer number of shooters on the roster. In the season's first four games alone, IUPUI had had 10 different players make at least one three, coming off a season in which nine Jags made a trey a year ago.Â
9 IN DUBSÂ Â Â Sophomore Aaron Brennan became the ninth different Jaguar to hit for double-digits in a game this season, tallying 10 points in the win over Miami (Dec. 5). He joins Barksdale, Combs, Archie, O'Leary, Pickett, Hall, Henderson and Osborne on that list.
