KENNESAW, Ga. - Senior
Mason Archie scored a team-high 12 points and sophomore
Jordan Pickett added 11 but it wasn't enough as the Jaguars fell to host Kennesaw State in the KSU Subregional of the Legends Classic on Monday night (Nov. 23). Both
T.J. Henderson and
Nick Osborne joined them in double-digits with 10 points apiece in the loss.
Yonel Brown led four KSU (1-4) players in double-digits with 19 points and Nigel Pruitt chimed in with 13 in the win. Nick Masterson tallied 12 and Kendrick Ray added 10 for the victors.
With the defeat, IUPUI (2-3) will move on to play South Alabama in the consolation game at 3:00 p.m. inside the KSU Convocation Center.
IUPUI finished the game shooting just 35 percent from the floor and 6-of-23 from three-point range while KSU rode its traditional flex offense to a 45 percent shooting night.
"We didn't play well enough to win," IUPUI Head Coach
Jason Gardner said. "We played okay for some stretches, but it wasn't consistent enough to get a road win. The tough part is that we've got to come back tomorrow and figure some things out and be ready to play.
"We've got a good team, we're just not in sync right now, both offensively and defensively. We're going to get better once we have an opportunity to get some practices in, but right now, we're not where we need to be."
IUPUI used a quick 7-0 run behind junior
Darell Combs to seize a 23-17 lead with 7:52 left before halftime. Combs started the rally with a pair of free throws and then assisted on back-to-back baskets - an Archie trey and an Osborne 14-footer - to give the Jags their largest lead of the half. However, momentum swung dramatically as the host Owls outscored the Jaguars 16-5 over the final seven-plus minutes. KSU pushed out to a 33-25 lead before Henderson stroked a wing trey on the Jaguars' final possession to make it 33-28 at the half. Archie and Henderson combined to hit four first half treys to keep the Jaguars within striking distance in the opening half.
The second half started well for the Jaguars as
Matt O'Leary opened with a layup and later
Marcellus Barksdale hit a wing three to cut the lead back to 35-33. However, KSU scored the game's next seven points, including back-to-back Nick Masterson jumpers, to extend the lead. Gardner tried multiple combinations throughout the second half in an effort to cut into the KSU lead, ultimately settling on Pickett, Henderson, Archie, Barksdale and O'Leary.
All 11 of Pickett's points came in the second half while O'Leary scored all seven of his after the break. The Jaguars were held to just five second half field goals over the first 16-plus minutes before rallying furiously to try and make it a game. The Jaguars closed within six in the closing minutes, but Pruitt punctuated the win with an uncontested two-handed dunk against the IUPUI press with under a minute to play.
Ray just missed a double-double with 10 points, nine boards and three assists and Pruitt closed with six boards. Barksdale and Osborne led the Jags with eight boards each.
The win was the first for former National Coach of the Year Al Skinner as head coach of the Owls. Skinner has achieved more than 350 career wins, primarily at Boston College.
Tuesday's game with South Alabama will be heard on 107.5 FM as Morgan Adcock (pxp) calls the action. IUPUI won a meeting between the two schools last season inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum in overtime.
