JAGS FALL AT MARQUETTE IN OVERTIME THRILLER, 75-71

Junior Darell Combs scores a career-high 21 points in defeat

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The upset minded IUPUI basketball team took host Marquette to the limit inside BMO Harris Bradley Center on Monday night (Nov. 16) in their first game of the 2015 Legends Classic, but ultimately fell victim in overtime, 75-71. Marquette (1-1) outscored the Jaguars 6-2 in the extra session, including a pivotal Duane Wilson three-point play in the closing seconds.

Junior Darell Combs led four Jaguars in double-digits with 21 points and seven boards while Nick Osborne added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Mason Archie tallied 11 and Matt O'Leary finished with 10 points, six boards and three assists in the loss. Henry Ellenson led Marquette with 18 points and junior Luke Fischer finished with 17 points and 10 boards. Wilson added 16 and Sandy Cohen, III scored 11 off the Marquette bench.

IUPUI (1-1) had a chance to win it in regulation after Wilson missed a contested potential go-ahead trey with seven seconds left. After the miss, Combs tracked down the rebound in front of the Marquette and raced into the frontcourt in front of his own bench. After being cut off, he dished to Archie in the corner, who had just completed a four-point play just more than three minutes prior. However, the athletic Cohen swatted the attempt as the final horn sounded.

Marquette struck first in overtime when the 6-foot-11 Ellenson knocked down a short baseline jumper but IUPUI tied the game for the ninth time when Osborne stuck a 15-footer. The two sides traded empty trips until Ellenson split a pair of free throws with 62 seconds to play. After a Combs turnover, Wilson came up with the final dagger, dropping in a layup from the left side while absorbing contact from Archie for a three-point play. IUPUI missed a pair of threes on the final possession to end the game.

"We fought, we just didn't hit shots late. We had too many empty trips and that cost us," IUPUI Head Coach Jason Gardner said. "We had our chances though. We came into a tough environment and played a good team toe-to-toe. There's a lot of positives to take out of this one. I thought our bigs played really well against their bigs. We ended up outrebounding them 13-11 on the offensive glass and hit all 10 of our free throws. We did a lot of good things tonight, it just wasn't quite enough.

"I'm really proud of our guys and their effort though. They did a good job of paying attention to detail and executing the gameplan."

IUPUI used resiliency to offset a size disadvantage and relied on the three-point line and Marquette turnovers throughout. The Jaguars got down as many as 12 in the first half as Fischer and Ellenson bullied their way through the IUPUI front line. However, the Jaguars had five different players combine to make six first half treys, including a stretch of makes from Aaron Brennan, O'Leary and Combs to build a four-point lead with 2:09 left before halftime. The Golden Eagles opted to employ an extended 2-3 zone over the final two minutes and stymied the Jaguars to close the half, all while scoring the final four points to pull even at 36 all by halftime.

The Jaguars opened the second half scoring with an Osborne three and had a 47-45 lead with 16:21 left after O'Leary picked Haanif Cheatham near midcourt and raced the other way for a one-handed jam. Marquette answered with nine straight points, bringing the crowd of 11,597 to its collective feet in an attempt to bury the Jaguars.

Enter Combs, who seemingly thrived when the crowd was at its loudest.

The Eastern Michigan-transfer scored IUPUI's next 12 points, the final coming on a three-point play with 6:01 left to cut the Marquette lead to 60-59. Then, after a Combs turnover, Marcellus Barksdale countered with a quick steal of his own in the backcourt and banked home a go-ahead 10-footer to give the Jags back the advantage.

Marquette rebuilt a four-point lead with 2:01 left, but the Jags scored the final four points in regulation on a pair of Archie free throws and an Osborne layup after a gorgeous diagonal delivery from Barksdale.

Not known as a great perimeter shooting team, IUPUI aired it out offensively on Monday to hit 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) with four different starters contributing two makes. Combs ended the game 8-of-17 overall in a team-high 39 minutes. Brennan added nine points and four boards off the bench and Barksdale was the only other IUPUI player to score, closing with six points, six rebounds and four assists.

Marquette's size helped lead to 29 free throw attempts, including 12 from Ellenson, a 2015 McDonald's All-American. The hosts cashed in on 24-of-29 (82.8 percent) freebies, helping offset 20 turnovers. IUPUI turned the 20 Marquette turnovers into 25 points.

IUPUI dropped to 0-3 all-time against Marquette and 1-4 in the five games they've played at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Jaguars will continue play in the Legends Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 18 when they take on NC State inside PNC Arena at 7:00 p.m.. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN3 and can be heard on IUPUIJags.com as Morgan Adcock (pxp) calls the action. Wednesday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
