BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The IUPUI men's soccer team lost 4-0 to Indiana on Wednesday night (Oct. 7). The Jags held tight with the Hoosiers much of the match, but IUPUI's lack of subs caught up with them late in the game.
"When you play a team like Indiana here at Indiana it's tough," Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "We didn't have our subs because of injuries, but I have to commend our players because they gave it all they had."
IUPUI (0-6-4) kept Indiana (7-3-1) in check early as the Jaguars' defense held their shape much of the first half.
In the 16th minute, IU's Phil Fives made a run down the left sideline and played a ball to a cutting Matt Foldesy who made a spin move and finished near post from about 15 yards.
IUPUI keeper
Eduardo Cortes couldn't get to the Foldesy strike, but he played extremely well the rest of the half, parrying three shots, including a rocket from IU's Femi Hollinger-Janzen in the 42nd minute.
Senior
Clint Hoffar was active offensively in the first half, pressuring the IU back line. Hoffar attempted a 20-yard strike that missed the upper right corner by a few feet. The senior captain got a breakaway opportunity late in the second half that just missed as well.
Early in the second half, freshman
Nick Anderson got tangled with IU's Tanner Thompson in the box, resulting in an IU penalty kick. Hollinger-Janzen took the PK and struck it lower left, while Cortes guessed right, for the 2-0 lead.
An IU corner kick in the 66th minute gave Hollinger-Janzen a header on frame that seemed to beat Cortes but was headed away by freshman
Ryan Machonga. It was around that time in the game that IUPUI's lack of depth began to catch up with them.
The third IU goal came in the 80th minute. IU sent a hard cross from the end line back across Cortes' face where a host of bodies collided at the six, resulting in an IUPUI own goal. IU's Austin Panchot converted a header five minutes later to cap the game at 4-0.
The Jags were outshot 24-6 and 11-2 on frame. Cortes tallied seven saves total in the match, bringing his season total to 67 and his saves per game average to 6.7, both statistics ranking top-three in the nation.
"Indiana is a great team," Coach Jacob added. "They're a tournament team. They're going to make a great run, so to have our guys come out here after playing back-to-back overtime games, I just give them credit."
The Jags playing just one sub in the contest, former manager
Carlos Albor, because a rash of injuries has decimated the bench. IUPUI lost junior
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh to injury prior to the game as well. The Jags are essentially down to 14 available players and will look to get those guys some rest heading into the weekend.
"We have to rest them," Jacob said. "We just have to hope and pray that the other guys who are hurt are back. When you lose a kid like Harold when you were expecting him to go, there's nothing you can do."
IU, which received votes in the most recent Top 25 polls, extended its winning streak to four.
IUPUI is now 0-6-4 on the season. The Jags have a quick turnaround as they come back to Indy to host Bowling Green (6-5-0) on Saturday at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Kickoff is set for Noon. Saturday's game will be Professor Appreciation Day as the Jags will honor professors who attend the match. Admission is free but standard IUPUI parking rates may apply.
