CHARLESTON, Ill. - On the heels of a hard week of training, the IUPUI men's and women's swimming teams will head west to compete against Eastern Illinois in a dual at Padovan Pool on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 17). Meanwhile, the men's and women's divers will head north to participate in the Indiana Intercollegiates, hosted by Purdue.
"We've worked them really hard in the water this week," IUPUI Head Coach
Matt Bos said. "I know we've got some tired kids coming in, but they still want to perform well."
Both the men's and women's teams earned third-place finishes at the season-opening Notre Dame Relays last weekend. The women trailed Notre Dame and Illinois State while the men's side finished behind Notre Dame and former conference foe Oakland.
Entering this weekend, IUPUI owns six of the fastest times in The Summit League, including
Lennart Kuester holding the top 50, 100 and 200 freestyle times in the early going. Kuester was impressive in swimming the lead legs of three relays at Notre Dame, including helping the Jags to runner-up finishes in both the 200 and 400 free relays.
IUPUI also got impressive swims from
Aaron Brysch and
Matt Stowe in the opener.
Junior
Maranda Buha has the quickest 50 free time in the league at 24.96 from her opening effort of the 200 free relay. Senior
Madison Taylor has a league-best 54.76 in the 100 free from her lead in the 4x100 and junior
Madeline Bradford is tops in the league in the 100 backstroke at 58.85, after opening the 400 medley relay.
The divers will be competing for the second time this season as well this weekend, coming off some non-traditional scoring at Notre Dame. The duo of
Melissa Berger and
Bailey Wills placed third among five duos on the women's side and the men's duo of
Erik Romer and
Krisztian Somhegyi was IUPUI's top pairing, also placing third.
"I'm looking forward to showcasing our men's team and our five new freshmen," Diving Coach
Eric Barnes said. "Our girls team has two Summit League finalists on both boards returning, so that's exciting for the program."
