INDIANAPOLIS – In its first competition of 2015, the IUPUI women's swimming and diving team was able to earn a split Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium by defeating Xavier to offset a slim loss to Ball State.

The Jaguars earned the win over the Musketeers by a 153-141 score, while suffering a 167-133 loss to the Cardinals.

"It was great to get back in our pool and compete again. We had to shake off some rust and get back in the racing mindset but all in all we raced well," head coach Matt Bos said. "Coming off our winter training, I feel like we have a lot to build on down the stretch."

The meet couldn't have started better for the Jaguars after earning a win in the 200 medley relay. Following the relay, Natalie Trout cracked the Top 3 in the 1,000 free swimming the 40 lengths in 10:43.81.

Another Top-3 finish ensued when Brittani Grove placed third in the 200 free at 1:58.04, but then the first individual victory of the night occurred in the next event when Alexus Laird eked out a .18 second victory in the 100 back with a time of 58.39.

Following Laird's individual victory, IUPUI went seven events without another win until Alexis Bullard and Jennifer Oleksiak posted back-to-back victories in the 100 fly and 200 IM, respectively. Bullard timed in at 56.48 to win the 100 fly, while Oleksiak notched a 2:12.02 to win the IM by .22 seconds.

In between Laird's and Bullard's wins, the Jags had four second-place finishes with Oleksiak earning two of those runner-ups in the 100 and 200 breast. The other second-place showings came from Maranda Buha in the 50 free and Laird in the 200 back.

To close out the night, the Jags finished just as they started with their 400 free relay squad claiming a win in a tight race in 3:34.56.

Up next for the Jags is a dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 15, against Wisconsin-Green Bay at the IUPUI Natatorium. That contest is set to begin at 5 p.m.
