VALPARAISO, Ind. - The IUPUI men's cross country team was unable to repeat as champions of the Crusader Classic, falling by an eight-point margin to Notre Dame in the 4K event on Friday evening (Sept. 5) at Sunset Hills Farm. IUPUI won last year's meet by a single point over the Fighting Irish.

Junior Joey Zielinski placed third overall in a time of 11:11.3 and Xavier-transfer Tom Ohlman made his IUPUI debut with a fourth-place finish of 11:13.7.

"Zielinski, Ohlman, Peyton Reed and Hubner ran well," IUPUI Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. "Notre Dame brought the dogs out. We will be better now that we're getting into meets that matter to the entire team though."

Peyton Reed, Mitch Hubner and Damon Pruett were all among IUPUI's top five finishers at this meet for the second straight year and earned top-12 finishes this season. Reed was sixth at 11:15.2, Hubner was eighth at 11:20.7 and Pruett was 12th at 11:27.2. 

Junior Miguel Lozano was 14th at 11:30.7 in his season debut and sophomore Sammy Tebeje was immediately behind him at 11:32.1. 

Notre Dame's Chris Marco won the race in a time of 11:04.2 and his teammate Jacob Dumford was second at 11:09.5. All total, Notre Dame put five runners among the race's top five to earn the team win. 

The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Sept. 19 when they participate in the Indiana Intercollegiates, held this season at Purdue University.
