WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's cross country team had reason to celebrate on Friday evening (Sept. 19) as the Jaguars took second at the 2014 Indiana Intercollegiate Championships at Purdue, falling only to the nation's seventh-ranked team, Indiana. IUPUI's second-place finish was the program's best in the Jaguars' 18-year history and was fueled by three top-10 finishes.

Junior Joey Zielinski finished the 8K race in a time of 25:23.9 to finish eighth of 150 runners while senior Tom Ohlman was ninth at 25:28.2. Sophomore Peyton Reed was tenth overall in a personal best time of 25:33.8.

"Our kids ran great. Our first five especially ran great," IUPUI Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. "We pretty much expected it from Joey and Tommy, but Peyton Reed was right there pretty much like he's been saying all along. Miguel and Abiel did a great job and were right there as well. Those five guys - hats off to them.

"It was a great meet for us and great for our program. It kind of put us on the map. All in all, it's a great thing for our program. I wouldn't say it's our best meet, but it's our best finish at this meet. Hopefully, there's more to come in the future."

Junior Miguel Lozano was 14th overall in a time of 25:51.1 and sophomore Abiel Mogos came through with a 29-second personal best time of 25:52.9 to place 15th. The formula worked for the Jaguars as IUPUI's sixth runner, sophomore Mitch Hubner, was more than 40 seconds off Mogos' pace at 26:38.8. Hubner was 28th overall and sophomore Damon Pruett was right behind him in 29th, finishing in a time of 26:43.6.

Indiana State's John Mascari won the race in a time of 24:32.8 and Purdue's Matt McClintock was second at 24:45.2. Indiana took the next four spots, led by Evan Esselink's third-place effort of 24:50.5.

Indiana dominated the team scoring with 29 points while the Jaguars finished with 56 points. Indiana State (64), Purdue (73) and Evansville (154) rounded out the five-team Division I field.

In the open race earlier in the day, a pair of seniors showed some life as Spencer Burgin was 14th in a time of 26:33.3 and Pryce Ragains was 18th of 160 competitors at 26:42.8. Dakota Dubbs turned in a strong PR of 27:25.4 during the open race.

IUPUI will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when the Jaguars participate in the Notre Dame Invitational.
