CARMEL, Ind. - Despite sitting out a number of key contributors, the IUPUI men's cross country team opened the 2014 campaign with a second-place finish at the Butler Opener at Northview Church on Saturday (Aug. 30) morning. Host Butler won the meet with 26 points while IUPUI (36) and Marian (68) rounded out the three-team field.

Both Butler and the Jaguars opted to sit a slew of standouts to rest in the season's early going. IUPUI also had a number of runners compete unattached, thus not factoring into the team scoring.

Sophomore Peyton Reed led the Jaguars' lineup with a third-place finish, closing the 6K race in a time of 19:31.4. Fellow sophomore Damon Pruett was sixth overall at 19:53.8 and Max Zmija was eighth at 20:03.7.

"We sat some boys out, but the kids that did fill in did a nice job," IUPUI Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. "Both Reed brothers, I thought did a nice job. Abiel Mogos did a nice job. A lot of guys stepped up.

"Most of our kids really trained hard this summer and really put in a lot of miles, so they're in terrific shape. All in all, I thought our kids did a nice job and they were out there and competed."

Dakota Dubbs was ninth at 20:05.8 and Mitch Hubner was tenth at 20:06.2.

Butler's Matt Lumbar won the race in a time of 19:21.7 and his teammate Chris O'Brien was second at 19:23.6.

The Jaguars will continue the fall schedule at the Crusader Open on Friday, Sept. 5 in Valparaiso, Ind.. Last year, the Jags won the three-team meet, edging Notre Dame by a single point for the title.
