SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - IUPUI senior
Mitch Patton scored 18 points and
Ian Chiles added 12, but the Jaguars couldn't match four Mastodons in double-digits as the Jaguars' season came to a close in the quarterfinals round of The Summit League Tournament on Saturday (Mar. 8), 85-47 to Fort Wayne. Luis Jacobo led all scorers with 19 points and seven boards and Mo Evans chipped in 13 points off the bench.
Fort Wayne (23-9) shot 57.4 percent overall and 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from three-point range, while outrebounding the Jaguars 39-23.
IUPUI (6-26) jumped in front early behind Chiles' hot shooting before the Mastodons seized control late in the first half. The Jaguars trailed 18-16 when senior
Donovan Gibbs swished a short jumper, but IPFW reeled off a 14-2 run to take command of the contest.
After trailing 40-22 at the break, IUPUI scored the first bucket of the second half on a Patton 17-footer before Fort Wayne scored nine straight points, capped by a Joe Edwards dunk in transition. The 38-point final margin was IPFW's largest lead of the night and marked the Jaguars' largest margin of defeat in Summit League Tournament play.
"They're a team that's been around a long time, a team with experience," IUPUI Head Coach Todd Howard said. "Two years ago, they were the eight seed. Now, they have seven, eight, nine guys that played multiple minutes together, hundreds of games together and that's what that looks like.
"We just needed a few pieces to get going."
Jacobo hit 8-of-12 shots for the 'Dons, including three threes, while Evans was 5-of-9 off the bench. Steve Forbes (11 points) and Edwards (10 points) also finished in double-digits.
Patton scored 14 of his 18 after halftime and added three blocked shots, closing his IUPUI career with 88 rejections. Chiles hit 5-of-14 shots for 12 points and sophomore
Marcellus Barksdale finished with eight rebounds and three assists.
IUPUI exited The Summit League Tournament in the quarterfinals round for the third consecutive year and finished the season with a 6-26 record. Fort Wayne will move on to Monday's semifinals round and will face the winner of No. 3 South Dakota State/No. 6 Western Illinois.
