INDIANAPOLIS – Despite a late charge by the Oakland Grizzlies, the IUPUI women's swimming and diving team concluded its regular-season on a high note by notching its first-ever victory over its former Summit League foe, 153-144, Saturday afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.
"Overall we have struggled the last few weeks and this is the first time we have really seen some life out of our team," head coach
Matt Bos said. "We really needed to show some signs of life and now that we are beginning to rest, we need to keep sharpening up and I think we'll be in a great spot come the Summit League championships."
For
Alvina Brown, Saturday marked her final regular-season competition at the IUPUI Natatorium and she may have saved her best performance for last. When the Jags needed her most, Brown maintained a lead during her leg of the 200 freestyle relay helping the Jags claim the program's first win over the Golden Grizzlies.
"V has been putting in so much good work and in the past couple meets she has performed really well and has earned the spot on those 'A' relays," Bos said. "She stepped up and swam well today and I couldn't be happier for her to do that on her Senior Day."
The women's 200 medley relay quartet of
Alexus Laird,
Jennifer Oleksiak,
Maranda Buha and Brown got the Jaguars off to a strong start by winning the event in 1:47.34.
In the first individual event,
Natalie Trout placed third in the 1,000 free (10:44.05), but then the Jags rattled off three straight victories to take the lead.
Margaret Barber and
Madeline Bradford went 1-2 in the 200 free to start the string of victories with Barber clocking a time of 1:55.95 followed by Bradford's 1:56.46. Laird and Oleksiak then claimed wins in the 50 backstroke and the 50 breaststroke, respectively, with times of 26.59 and 30.33.
Buha then placed second in the 100 fly (58.92) and
Madison Taylor tacked on a second-place time of 21.61 in the 50 free to send IUPUI into the first break with a 67.0 to 63.0 lead.
Out of the break, the Jags were able to extend their lead when Taylor and Brittany Grove went 1-2 in the 100 free with times of 53.64 and 54.25, respectively, and the lead continued to expand with wins by Laird and Oleksiak in the 100 back and 200 back, respectively, with marks of 57.47 and 1:05.14. Oleksiak's time equaled the sixth-best in program history.
Barber added her second win of the day in the 500 free by touching the wall in 5:08.44, but Oakland went 1-2-3 in the 50 fly to close within 13 points, 128-115, with just two swimming events and a pair of diving events remaining.
Out of the final break, Oleksiak was in a close race with Patricia Aschan in the 100 IM before falling just short of the victory with a time of 59.43.
By virtue of Oakland winning the 1- and 3-meter dives and IUPUI finishing second and third thanks to
Melissa Berger and
Bailey Wills, the Jags held on to just a four-point lead entering the final relay, the 200 free relay. It was there that the Jags held on to win the event by .12 seconds with a time of 1:37.50 to defeat the Golden Grizzlies.
IUPUI will have 18 days off before hosting the Summit League Championships Feb. 19-22 at the IUPUI Natatorium.
