INDIANAPOLIS - Visiting Omaha put six players in double-digits and shot 52 percent overall as the Mavericks raced past IUPUI in Summit League action, 99-71 inside the Jungle on Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon. Devin Patterson led Omaha (13-9, 3-4 Summit) with 15 points, six boards and six assists and John Karhoff contributed 14 on 6-of-8 shooting. Justin Simmons (13), Marcus Tyus (13), CJ Carter (12) and Alex Phillips (12) also closed in double-digits.

Redshirt freshman Elijah Ray provided the Jaguars with a bright spot, pumping in a career-high 19 points off the bench, and senior center Mitch Patton added 14 points and six caroms.

Omaha, recently popularized by the pre-snap cadence of this city's favorite son, Peyton Manning, came out at break neck speed and laser-like efficiency, racing out to a 15-4 lead in the opening five minutes. The lead grew to 15 moments later on a Tyus layup and IUPUI (5-19, 0-7 Summit) could never gain traction.

"A high octane attack like Omaha's is a hard train to stop. It's a football analogy, but you have to keep their offense off the field. Our turnovers early, and it wasn't a ton, led to a huge payoff for them," IUPUI Head Coach Todd Howard said. "When you are without Ian (Chiles) and Ja'Rob (McCallum) on this kind of game, limiting them is utmost priority."

First half stops were a rarity on Saturday though as the Mavs shot 68 percent before halftime, hitting six of their first eight three-point attempts. Patterson started 3-for-3 from deep as Omaha built a 55-36 halftime bulge.

Even halftime didn't deter the Mavs as they connected on three triples in three possessions to start the second half. The fourth trip resulted in a Karhoff three-point play, making it 67-40. The Jaguars were unable to get within 20 the rest of the day.

"Too many empty trips against anyone in our league dooms you," Howard said. "They can shoot it as well as anyone. You must keep them out of transition."

Ray, given ample opportunity on Saturday, made the most of it, hitting 7-of-11 shots to go along with five boards and three assists in 26 minutes. His previous career-high was an eight-point effort against IU Northwest in mid-November.

"I'm really proud of Elijah," Howard said. "He was ready. He's been injured a ton and he's played behind some seniors, but he was ready today."

Patton was 7-of-10 from the field and Josh James came up with seven points and four rebounds in just seven minutes late in the game.

"Mitch looked and played like a senior," Howard said. "He needed more help."

Omaha outscored IUPUI 21-6 off turnovers and 14-2 in transition. Carter collected six assists and four steals from Omaha's lead guard spot, while both Simmons and Mike Rostampour grabbed eight boards apiece.

Sophomore guard Marcellus Barksdale led IUPUI with eight boards, five assists and three steals, but scored just six points on 3-of-10 shooting.

The loss was the Jaguars' seventh straight to open league play and dropped IUPUI to 0-3 all-time against Omaha.

IUPUI will now hit the road for a two-game Summit League road trip, beginning at North Dakota State on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. The game will be televised on Fox College Sports and MidcoSN and can be heard in Indianapolis on WNDE 1260 AM and on the free iHeartRadio app. Will Flemming (pxp) will call the action from Bison Sports Arena.
