INDIANAPOLIS - For the second consecutive season, the IUPUI men's soccer team played Detroit to a scoreless draw, this time at the Jaguars' on-campus Carroll Stadium on a chilly, rainy Tuesday night (Nov. 4). Junior goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes registered four saves to earn his second straight shutout and the tenth of his collegiate career.
With the draw, Cortes ran his scoreless streak to 232 straight minutes without allowing a score, dating back to the 1-1 tie with Western Illinois on Oct. 25.
"We just couldn't finish tonight," IUPUI Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "Credit Detroit, that's a good team, but we had our chances. We created opportunities and just didn't finish."
Both sides had better second half scoring chances than in the scoreless first half. Junior back
Clint Hoffar hit the left post with a shot after
Jonathan Kopp whipped a corner kick into the penalty area in the 68th minute. Later, Hoffar cleared a shot off the back line in the 85th minute after Detroit's Matt DeVries had a shot aimed just inside the right post at the other end of the field.
Detroit (9-5-4) outshot the Jaguars (5-7-3) 22-17 overall, but only put five attempts on target. IUPUI had nine of its 17 attempts on target against UD backup goalie Robbie Beckwell. Beckwell finished with eight stops and benefited from a team save in the second overtime.
Both teams had just one shot attempt in the first overtime period as UD's Cameron Roberts missed wide left on a header after Matt Ybarra played a corner kick into traffic. Moments later, IUPUI sophomore
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh picked off a pass just inside midfield, carried the ball forward and ripped a shot towards the left post that Beckwell collected, diving to his right.
IUPUI nearly ended it in the 103rd minute on what looked to be another heroic effort by
Uriel Macias. After Cortes plucked a UD corner kick out of the air, he opted to send a 50-50 ball down the middle of the field towards Macias. The IUPUI attacker and Beckwell converged on the ball at the same time just inside the 18-yard box with Macias heading it towards the goal. However, a UD defender was able to clear the shot off the line, just inches ahead of it nearly ending the match.
Adam Clauss led all players with six shots off the Detroit bench while Hoffar and
Emmanuel Usen had four shots each for the Jaguars. Both sides were without key players as each team is scheduled for key conference games this coming weekend.
The Jaguars will cap the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Omaha with a 2:00 p.m. kickoff. The Jaguars are vying for a spot in the four-team Summit League Tournament and can still win a share of the league title with a victory.
