Chuck Koeppen PostgameMADISON, Wisc. - The IUPUI Men's Cross Country team claimed a ninth-place finish at today's (Nov. 14) D1 NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet marking the best-ever Jaguar team finish. Summit League Champion
Tom Ohlman led the team through the line in 30:48 for a 29th place individual finish, missing All-Region honors by four spots.
Entering the race ranked eighth in the region, the Jaguars missed their mark by one slot. An impressive showing still, they continue to push the program to new limits. The men scored a total of 253 points, just one point behind crosstown rival Butler (252) and 12 points behind Indiana State (241). Notre Dame wasn't too far ahead with a score of 205 points to claim sixth-place.
"I thought our kids really ran well," IUPUI Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen said. "I'm really proud of these guys. They really had a great attitude all season long and it was our highest finish ever.
"We would've loved to have finishes as high as seventh, but it just didn't happen."
The Jags successfully cap off a groundbreaking season, surpassing barriers previously untouched by any past IUPUI team. While Ohlman accelerated over the latter course of the season, he was far from a one-man band. Sophomore
Peyton Reed placed 38th in a time of 31:02 and junior
Miguel Lozano was 47th at 31:16.
Fellow junior
Joey Zielinski continued to fend off injuries to run a time of 31:22 while
Dakota Dubbs was 87th at 32:02. Freshman
Isaiah White rounded out the Jaguars' lineup at 32:08, finishing 94th.
Host Wisconsin won the regional title with 61 points and Michigan State was second with 82 points. Two more Big Ten foes controlled the top four spots as Michigan (94) and Indiana (126) were the first four to cross.
