INDIANAPOLIS - After earning a split on Friday evening against Western Illinois and Saint Louis, the IUPUI men's swimming and diving team had a quick turnaround taking on both Indiana University and Western Kentucky on Saturday.

The Jags ended up on the wrong side of things against both teams, but they were able to put together some strong performances as the meet progressed.

"We had some people really come out and be aggressive today, but overall the team lacked energy and we just can not do that against high quality opponents," head coach Matt Bos said. "We need to use this weekend as a learning experience, especially since we are so young, and come out better after a weekend like this. Seeing us step up and take that last relay with a very solid 3:06 just shows that with the right energy we can swim with these types of team."

The Jags couldn't have finished on a better note than they did by winning the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The Jags were behind following the first 100, but it was Lennart Kuester's second split of 45.47 that put IUPUI in front. Down the stretch, Trenton Wolfe and Aaron Brysch put in sub 47-second splits to secure the winning time of 3:06.02.

In addition to helping IUPUI to the win in the 400 free relay, Kuester also put together some strong individual showings highlighted by his win in the 100 free, the Jaguars lone individual swimming victory of the day. Kuester took the top spot in the four-lengths race with a time of 46.24, bettering IU's Sam Lorentz by .66 seconds.

The other individual wins came in diving with Cody Watts winning the 1- and the 3- meter dives. The 3-meter dive proved to be his best of the two events with Watts putting up a six-dive score of 333.60.

Alongside Kuester's and Watts' wins, IUPUI put up three runner-up finishes. Kuester earned one of those in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.54, while Adam Ferguson and Jon Stoller claimed the other two in the 200 breast and 200 IM, respectively, with marks of 2:07.31 and 1:55.27.

IUPUI will head to the state of Ohio next weekend to get its final preparations in before hosting the 2014 House of Champions. The Jags are scheduled to take on Wright State on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
