FARGO, N.D. - The IUPUI women's soccer team continued to find the road unfriendly as the Jaguars fell by a 1-0 score at North Dakota State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5). NDSU's Amy Yang scored the game-winner in the 77th minute and Bison goalie Sierra Bonham needed just one save to collect the shutout. Freshman
Catherine Schmidt took the loss for the Jaguars, finishing the day with six saves in 90 minutes of action.
"It was a tough day," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We did not play badly but we did not play offensively to our ability. Defensively, we played well and the goal we gave up was on a deflected shot that landed at their player's feet."
After a busy afternoon, Yang finally solved Schmidt in the 77th minute, receiving a pass from Anisha Kinnarath before slotting a shot from the right side of the box past the Jaguars' keeper. For Yang, NDSU's assist leader coming in, it was her first goal of the season.
IUPUI's (2-8-3, 0-2 Summit) lone shot on goal came in the 11th minute when
Catherine Raster tested Bonham, just moments after another promising IUPUI build was thwarted due to an offsides call. Schmidt, making her sixth career start, was steady in goal, including making a pair of first half saves.
IUPUI came out more aggressive to start the second half, getting early shots from
Krissy Kirkhoff and Raster and a pair of early corner kicks, but remained unable to break through. Junior
Kalli Shepler-Tucker had a shot fly well high of target in the 75th minute, just 90 seconds ahead of Yang's game-winner.
NDSU (5-6, 1-1) finished with a 17-7 shot advantage and 5-3 edge on corner kicks. Kinnarath paced the Bison with six shots and Lauren Miller attempted four shots, putting three on frame. Kirkhoff and Raster had two shots apiece for the Jaguars.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 1-6-1 away from home this season. IUPUI dropped to 4-7 all-time against NDSU and winless in the last five meetings between the two schools. The Jaguars are 0-5 all-time in matches played in Fargo.
The Jaguars will continue The Summit League schedule on Friday, Oct. 10 when they host reigning champion Denver at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 7:00 p.m.. Admission is free and open to the public, however, standard university parking rates will apply.
