JAGS SCRATCH OUT 2-2 DRAW AT WMU

Freshmen Emmanuel Usen and Uriel Macias tally in 2-2 double overtime tie

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The IUPUI men's soccer team got goals from freshmen Emmanuel Usen and Uriel Macias and eight saves from junior goalie Eduardo Cortes as the Jaguars fought Western Michigan to a 2-2 double overtime draw on the road on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4).

IUPUI (2-5-1) struck first in the 12th minute as Macias scored his third goal of the season, chipping a shot over WMU goalie Chase Rau from distance. However, the lead lasted less than three minutes as Zach Bock tied the match at 1-1 for the Broncos in the 14th minute,

The Jaguars seized a second one-goal lead in the 34th minute, this time when Usen made a long carry up the sideline before netting his team-high fourth goal of the season. The lead stood until the 66th minute when WMU's Carlos Suarez knotted the match, scoring just inside the far post against Cortes.

Cortes came up big late in the match, including snaring a Sean Conerty drive after Clint Hoffar was issued a yellow card that occurred just outside the penalty box.

IUPUI's best opportunities in overtime came in the 96th and 98th minutes, the first being a Usen attempt that was saved by Rau. Moments later, Cristian Soto fired high on an attempt.

IUPUI was outshot 23-9 overall and finished with a 10-0 deficit on corner kicks.

Nick Wysong led WMU with seven shot attempts, putting two on frame. Conerty closed with six shot attempts and three shots on goal, all of which were plucked by Cortes. Cortes was aided by strong efforts from Ben Ogedegbe and Antonio Juarez in front of him. Juarez, making just his second-ever appearance, played all 110 minutes in the defensive third.

The draw kept IUPUI undefeated against the Broncos in the last five meetings, having won three straight from 2007 through 2011 before the two schools played to a 1-1 tie at Carroll Stadium in 2012.

IUPUI will return home on Tuesday, Oct. 7 when the Jaguars host Valparaiso at 7 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
