SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Running against the nation's elite, the IUPUI men's cross country team finished 21st of 24 teams at the 59th annual Notre Dame Invite on Friday (Oct. 3), finishing the meet with 524 points. Michigan won the event with 97 points, edging second-place BYU, which closed with 112. New Mexico (125), Florida State (162) and Eastern Kentucky (209) rounded out the field's top five. IUPUI finished just behind Indiana State and immediately in front of Loyola and Purdue.

South Bend-native Joey Zielinski led IUPUI's entries with a time of 24:09.4 in the 5-mile race, placing 48th of the 200 runners. Fifth-year senior Tom Ohlman was 66th overall at 24:21.3 and junior Miguel Lozano, from nearby Mishawaka, finished 133rd at 24:49.6.

Touted as a 5-mile race, the course was reduced due to inclement weather, leaving times incredibly fast. Zielinski was IUPUI's top finisher a season ago, running a time of 25:40.7 in a true 8K event.

IUPUI will continue to run against the nation's elite on Oct. 18 when the Jaguars participate in the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.. All total, 82 men's teams are expected to compete as the meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. that day.
