TULSA, Okla. - The IUPUI men's soccer team had its two-game winning streak snapped as the Jaguars dropped an important 2-1 decision to Oral Roberts at Case Soccer Complex on Saturday night (Oct. 18). The host Golden Eagles scored in the 71st and 74th minutes to secure the win, leaving IUPUI at 1-2 at the midpoint of Summit League play. ORU (5-6-2, 1-2-1 Summit) moved ahead of the Jaguars in the league standings with the win.
IUPUI (4-7-1, 1-2) drew first blood when freshman
Emmanuel Usen tallied his fifth goal of the year in the game's 36th minute. Classmate
Ryan Olans crossed a ball into Usen, who finished the play from 10 yards out.
The lead held for more than 30 minutes, despite each side threatening at various points.
Junior goalie
Eduardo Cortes made an incredible save to stop a Tarik Salkicic attempt in the 63rd minute, preserving the shutout to that point. In the 70th minute, IUPUI junior
Lance Davis hit the crossbar with a snipe and ORU pulled even just more than a minute later.
Johnny Chavez tallied the equalizer from in close, thanks to assists from Matthew Rogers and Alex White. The Golden Eagles seized control just more than three minutes later when Salkicic scored off an Edgardo Mira assist. Salkicic drilled a shot past Cortes from the right side for the eventual game-winner.
IUPUI's best chance from there was a
Jonny Williams attempt that was blocked with just under eight minutes to play, leading to a corner kick. However, the Jaguars were unable to muster a shot on the ensuing corner.
Oral Roberts outshot the Jaguars 21-6 overall and 7-2 on frame. Gerardo Salas led the Golden Eagles with four shot attempts while Usen paced the Jags with two tries. Cortes finished with five saves while ORU's Ben LaCourse needed one save in the win.
IUPUI will open a three-game homestand later this week when the Jaguars welcome Western Illinois to Carroll Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night (Oct. 25).
