PEORIA, Ill. - Some members of the IUPUI men's cross country team took full advantage of a late addition to the schedule on Friday (Oct. 17) as the Jaguars' reserves pulled off an eighth-place finish at the Bradley Classic. The Jaguars' varsity seven runners are expected to compete at the elite-level Pre-Nationals Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday (Oct. 18).

Freshman Isaiah White led the way with a 23rd-place finish on Friday, closing the 8k race in a time of 25:12.0. His time was less than a second away from placing him among IUPUI's top 15 all-time.

The Jaguars led the race near the 2K mark, before ultimately settling for a top-10 finish.

"We got out a little bit too quick, I think," IUPUI Head Coach Chuck Koeppen said. "We faded a little bit, but I'm really proud of these guys. An eighth-place finish for these guys is not a bad thing at all.

"A lot of them have run some really good races for us in the past, so we kind of knew what they were capable of. Of the group, Isaiah (White) and (Dakota) Dubbs really stood out."

Dakota Dubbs shattered his previous career best, running a time of 25:36.2 to finish 43rd overall. His time cleared his previous mark by nearly two full minutes. Sophomore Max Zmija finished at 25:44.6 in 55th-place and junior Ryan Cutter was 64th at 25:52.6.

Mitch Hubner placed 72nd overall at 25:58.0 and senior Spencer Burgin and sophomore Xavier Reed rounded out the top seven. Reed lowered his personal record by 37 seconds, finishing the race in a time of 26:15.3.

"A lot of guys had really good races today," Koeppen said. "I think Isaiah and Dubbs really made a case to be on the conference (championship) roster, so it was a really good day for those guys."

Illinois State won the team title with 119 points and Nebraska was second at 146, which edged Missouri by virtue of it's sixth and seventh runners. South Dakota State (164) and Saint Louis (170) rounded out the top five. IUPUI finished just one point back of Illinois and a single point in front of Morehead State in the tightly bunched top-10. Illinois State's Ryan Rutherford won the individual title at 24:21.6, just ahead of Northern Iowa's Zach Buchheit.

Following Saturday's Pre-Nats, IUPUI will next compete in the 2014 Summit League Championships in Fargo, N.D., at Rose Creek Golf Course. The men's 8K race is expected to start at 1:00 p.m. Eastern (noon Central) with the league championship on the line.
