INDIANAPOLIS – A busy weekend is on the horizon for the IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams as they open the dual meet portion of their schedule before embarking in their first invitational of the season.
The Jaguars kick off the weekend on Friday, Oct. 17, when the men's team will square off against Eastern Illinois and the women's team will take on the Panthers and Butler starting at 5 p.m. There won't be much time for rest as the Jags will be up early the next morning traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Purdue Invitational.
"This will be the first of several tests for us this year to see how mentally strong we are," head coach Matt Bos said. "With the quick turnaround going into Saturday I know we will be sore, but we are excited to get out there and compete against some good teams."
Two weeks ago, IUPUI kicked off the 2014-15 season with the IUPUI pentathlon – a unique event in which all the participants competed in the 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 free and 100 IM and the winner was determined by combining the five individual times together. Jon Stoller and Jenny Oleksiak both emerged with wins for their respective teams after both claimed individual victories in the 100 breast and 100 IM.
Cody Watts, the reigning Summit League Diver of the Year, also got his 2014-15 campaign off to a good start two weeks ago piecing together a six-dive score of 335.25 in the one-meter dive. That score was a personal-best and marked the second-best score in school history. For his efforts, he was named the Summit League Men's Diver of the Week this past Tuesday.
