FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team kept the good times rolling with a 3-1 road victory at Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12). Sophomore
Tori Minnich scored twice and freshman
Krissy Kirkhoff tallied the game-winner in the 50th minute as the Jaguars captured their second straight Summit League victory. It marks IUPUI's first back-to-back Summit League wins since October 2011 when they defeated Southern Utah and Western Illinois, both on the road, in succession.
Freshman
Catherine Schmidt earned Sunday's win in net, making three saves.
Offensively, IUPUI (4-8-3, 2-2 Summit) enjoyed a 21-13 shot advantage and 11-4 edge in shots on goal.
"We came out and we were all over them," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We put one in the back of the net and it very easily could've been two or three in their goal. They made some nice plays, but we did a good job of coming out and establishing control from the opening kickoff."
Minnich wasted little time putting the Jaguars in front, slotting a shot past IPFW goalie Sam Pavlika in the game's sixth minute. The Fort Wayne-native rolled a shot to the lower-left corner for her sixth goal of the season, thanks to an assist from junior
Lauren Kulaga. It was Kulaga's second assist in the past two games.
Fort Wayne pulled even in the 28th minute on a Taylor Pavlika penalty kick, drilling a score to Schmidt's left to knot the game.
With no lead to show despite a 14-5 first half shot advantage, the Jaguars took better advantage of their second half scoring opportunities.
"The halftime talk was all about responding to adversity," Johnson said. "We talked about showing the attitude we need to bring to games to tip them in our favor. That was the message and the girls really came out and showed it."
On the heels of a Fort Wayne yellow card that admittedly fired up the Jaguars, IUPUI used the foul as a tipping point. Kirkhoff netted the game-winner in the 50th minute, matching Minnich with a team-high sixth goal of the year. The Indianapolis-native blasted a shot just inside the right post for her second career game-winner after
Catherine Raster had rolled a pass to her at the top of the 18. Just less than seven minutes later, Minnich added insurance with a sliding finish, retaking the team lead in the process. This time,
Sierra Bryant played the ball forward, leading to Minnich's tough angled finish.
"Tori worked her butt off today, like she always does," Johnson said. "She was pretty determined throughout."
Despite scoring three goals, the day was also filled with some near misses as well. Kirkhoff hit the post in the 11th minute and sophomore
Alyssa Fox had a shot cleared off the line by a defender in the 63rd minute. IPFW also had a near miss in the 68th minute as Brooke Bashir hit the crossbar on a free kick.
Kirkhoff led the IUPUI attack with seven shot attempts while Fox had six attempts off the bench.
Johnson specifically praised the efforts of freshman
Ali Nelson and junior
Grace Perkowitz, as well as Bryant.
"Ali had a great game, just keeping things in front of her all day," Johnson said. "Grace was just steady Eddie out there, like she always is. She did a good job of keeping us composed and going the right direction."
IUPUI will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 19 when the Jaguars travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take on Oral Roberts.
