VERMILLION, S.D. - Brandon Bos scored 21 points and senior Trevor Gruis chipped in 18 as host South Dakota (7-9, 2-0 Summit) held off IUPUI in Summit League action inside DakotaDome on Thursday (Jan. 16) night. Junior

P.J. Hubert scored eight apiece and
Ian Chiles and
Marcellus Barksdale chipped in seven each.
The win was South Dakota's fourth straight while IUPUI started league play at 0-3 for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
IUPUI (5-15, 0-3 Summit) went in front 49-47 on a Patton hook shot with 11:46 to play, but managed just two field goals the rest of the way as the hosts improved to 6-1 at home this season. Bos immediately hit a trey to put USD back in front with 11:24 remaining and after a Najee miss, Gruis made it 52-49 on a short jumper.
The Jaguars ultimately went scoreless on five straight offensive possessions until Hubert hit a pair of free throws, making it 54-51 at the 7:33 mark. After Gruis split a pair of free throws to make it a two possession game, Chiles swished a clutch three to pull the Jags within one with 5:30 to play.
From there, USD closed the game on a 14-3 run.
Bos initiated the run with a layup over Patton and after an IUPUI turnover, Karim Rowson scored on a drive. Tyler Flack converted a key possession with a thunderous dunk with 3:05 remaining, but Hubert gave the Jaguars new life by swishing his second trey of the night. After a defensive stand, Chiles missed a corner three and Flack essentially ended any suspense with a tip-in with 61 seconds left.
The Coyotes hit all six free throw attempts in the final minute to skew the final outcome. The game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes, most of which came in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
IUPUI trailed by as many as nine in the first half as a Casey Kasperbauer trey put the Coyotes in front 32-23, but the Jaguars closed the half with a 10-0 run to take a 33-32 halftime lead. Stanback started the run with a 16-foot jumper and Hubert continued the forward momentum by splashing a triple. Barksdale hit a rare triple to make it eight straight points and Gibbs put the Jags in front with a right-handed hook with under a minute to play.
After shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half, the Jaguars connected on just 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) second half attempts and finished the night at 40.4 percent. USD hit 45.3 percent overall and 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from three-point range. Bos was 4-of-6 from deep and Kasperbauer buried two treys off the bench.
Hubert was 2-of-5 from three off the IUPUI bench and scored eight of the team's 12 bench points. Gibbs collected seven boards and three assists in 36 minutes work while Barksdale finished with six defensive rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal. Chiles, the league's second-leading scorer coming in, was held in check on 2-of-10 shooting.
Flack led USD with seven boards as the Coyotes won the glass, 33-28.
With the loss, IUPUI dropped to 1-4 all-time against South Dakota and 0-3 in games played inside the DakotaDome.
