INDIANAPOLIS – Competing for the second time in less than 24 hours, the IUPUI women's swimming and diving team battled and came away with wins over Saint Louis and Western Illinois Saturday afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The Jags earned a 219-75 win over Summit League foe Western Illinois and a favorable 176-123 decision over the Billikens.
"This weekend was both mentally and physically challenging. I thought the team did a great job coming back today and putting together some consistent swims," assistant coach
Stephanie Palmeri said. "As we move forward, there are still some things we need to continue to build on as we head into the Summit League Championships."
The Jags didn't get off to the start it had planned as its 400 medley relay team was disqualified while holding a commanding lead in the event, but IUPUI quickly bounced back strong in the 1,000 free behind a 1-2 finish from
Natalie Trout and
Vanessa Roop. Trout cruised to a winning time of 10:39.43, while Roop added a mark of 10:57.72.
In the next event, the 200 free,
Margaret Barber trailed with about 150 yards to go before rallying for a winning time of 1:55.78 to give IUPUI another individual victory.
The 1-2 finishes continued when
Madeline Bradford and
Sarah Rozow placed first and second, respectively, in the 100 back, which preceded a win by
Jennifer Oleksiak in the 100 breast (1:08.26) that gave the Jaguars four individual wins in the first four events.
Two events later,
Alexus Laird began a string of three consecutive victories when she won the 50 free in 24.42.
Madison Taylor gave the Jaguars the sweep in the sprint distance events winning the 100 free in 53.81, before Bradford earned both wins in the backstroke by winning the 200 back in 2:11.76.
Down the stretch, Barber won her second event of the day by touching the wall first in the 500 free and Oleksiak claimed two second-place showings in the 200 breast and the 200 IM, before IUPUI closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay.
The Jags will hit the road next weekend when it travels to the State of Wisconsin to take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Green Bay. IUPUI will face the Panthers on Friday, Jan. 17, before heading to Green Bay, Wis., to take on the Phoenix on Saturday, Jan. 18.
