CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will move to the second phase of the 2013 schedule, beginning on Sunday (Sept. 29), when the Jaguars take on Eastern Illinois in Summit League action. Sunday's match will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CST (3:30 Eastern) at Lakeside Field in Charleston, Ill..
IUPUI (0-7-2, 0-0-0 Summit) is eager to jump into the conference slate after a lackluster non-conference start to the year. Health issues have helped derail the Jaguars' offense this season as IUPUI has just five goals in nine games. Sophomore defender
Michael Sass leads IUPUI with a pair of goals while
Ian Block,
Lance Davis and
Jonny Williams have the remaining three goals. Four different Jaguars have one assist. Davis has been IUPUI's most dynamic attacker, attempting 14 shots in six matches, while Block has a team-high 18 attempts.
Finding continuity has been an issue though with at least seven different players having missed time due to injuries. Key midfielder
Fumio Himeno returned to make back-to-back starts at Oakland and Dayton, but was forced to leave the latter match early. Davis missed time earlier in the season, as did junior #
Tyler Drumm# and senior #
Gregory Efiom#.
In goal, reigning Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year
Eduardo Cortes has a 1.97 goals against average in eight starts and has made 32 stops. Behind him, true freshman
Christian Lomeli has allowed four goals and made three saves in limited action.
EIU (0-6-1, 0-0-0 Summit) has scored 13 times, but allowed 25 scores in seven matches. Jake Plant and Garet Christianson lead the Panthers with three goals each and Jake Brillhart has a Summit League-best four assists. In goal, Ben Feltes has played the majority of the team's minutes, registering a 3.79 GAA in four starts.
IUPUI leads the all-time series 4-3-3, including a 2-1 win at Carroll Stadium last season. The Jaguars are 1-2-1 in the previous four meetings in Charleston with the only win coming in 1999.
