DETROIT - The IUPUI men's soccer team got its regular brilliance from sophomore Eduardo Cortes as the Jaguars turned in a 0-0 double overtime draw in the 2013 season opener at Detroit on Friday (Aug. 30). The reigning Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year had five saves en route to his sixth career shutout. 

However, the Jaguars' offense continued its early season drought after having been blanked in both exhibitions prior to Friday's opener. Detroit (0-0-1) outshot the Jaguars (0-0-1) 13-12, but both sides had key scoring chances in the first 45 minutes. 

Freshman Cristian Soto led IUPUI with three shots in his collegiate debut while 2012 Horizon League Offensive Player of the Year Adam Bedell led all players with six attempts, four of which were on target. Sophomore Olayode Ahmed misfired on a key scoring opportunity in the first half, while Ben Ogedegbe also had a try go off target on a set piece in the 10th minute. 

"To get a 0-0 outcome and a shutout against last year's Horizon League champs is a good outcome, but not what we wanted," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "You have to give Detroit credit. We outshot them in the first half on their field, but they did a good job against us defensively. 

"They're a very strong, direct (attacking) team. We did a good job of withstanding their pressure and (Cortes) played really well in goal. Defensively, the boys were very professional in their work in the back and did a good job to keep it clean."

The Jaguars had a pair of Lance Davis corner kicks in the first overtime period, but was able to muster just one shot off the two corners. In the second overtime, Soto had IUPUI's only shot attempt. 

All total, the Jaguars remained undefeated against Detroit in the past three meetings, having won two straight over the Titans prior to Friday's draw. The Jaguars knocked off the Titans 2-0 at Carroll Stadium last season in both squad's season opener. 

"We'll build off this," Jacob said. "Now we get the opportunity to get home and play on the home turf."

IUPUI will next take the field on Tuesday, Sept. 3 when the Jaguars host crosstown rival Butler in a match that will be televised on Hometown Sports & News (HTSN), beginning at 7:00 p.m..
