PEORIA, Ill. - The IUPUI basketball team will cap its current string of five straight games away from home on Wednesday (Dec. 4) when the Jaguars take on Bradley (5-2) at 8:30 p.m. Eastern (7:30 Central) inside Renaissance Coliseum. Wednesday's contest can be heard via the free iHeartRadio app as Will Flemming (pxp) calls the action from courtside. It can also be viewed through Bradley's official website, BUBraves.com.
IUPUI's current five-game road string is the Jaguars' longest of the season and just eight games into the season, the Jags have already played in each of the four continental time zones.
The road weary Jaguars are seeking to snap a four-game skid, coming off an 87-76 loss to Chattanooga in Las Vegas last Friday (Nov. 29). Senior guard Ja'Rob McCallum scored a career-high 25 points in the loss, but early foul troubles derailed the Jaguars' efforts. Both
Ian Chiles and
Mitch Patton were sidelined in the first half due to foul trouble as IUPUI fell behind 45-33 at the break. Head Coach
Todd Howard's team cut the lead back to two midway through the second half, but ultimately never got over the hump.
McCallum hit 8-of-13 shots off the bench, including 3-of-5 from deep, eclipsing a previous 23-point effort he had posted against Youngstown State while playing for Milwaukee. Chiles chipped in 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting and junior
Khufu Najee tallied 13 points. Defensively, IUPUI (1-7) had no answer for Chattanooga's Z. Mason, who made 12-of-18 shots to finish with 27 points and nine boards. All five Chattanooga starters finished in double-digits as the Mocs connected on 58.8 percent from the field for the game.
Bradley (5-2) is 5-0 at home this year, including a recent 74-54 win over Texas-Pan American on Nov. 30. The Braves are keyed by senior lead guard Walt Lemon, Jr. (17.4 ppg, 4.4 apg, 3.9 rpg) and forward Tyshon Pickett (14.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 57.1 FG%). Head Coach Geno Ford's team's only two losses this year came on the road at Illinois and Arizona State. For the year, BU is shooting almost 49 percent from the floor and holding foes to just 40.6 percent shooting. The Braves have also been strong on the glass, outrebounding opponents by three caroms a night.
IUPUI is 1-2 all-time against Bradley, having dropped a 79-72 decision in Indianapolis on Nov. 17 of last season. John Hart led the Jaguars with 26 points in that loss, while both Patton and Greg Rice tallied 15 each. The only two other current Jaguars to appear in that game were
Donovan Gibbs (7 pts, 8 reb, 4 ast) and #Marcellus Barksdale (3 reb, 1 ast). Lemon led four Braves in double-figures with 19 points and six boards while Pickett finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Braves won the game on the interior, outrebounding the Jaguars 42-33 and outscored IUPUI in the paint, 48-20.
IUPUI's lone win against Bradley came on Dec. 21, 2002 as the Jaguars pulled out a 75-73 home victory, thanks to a layup from current Associate Head Coach
Matt Crenshaw with 6.6 seconds remaining. Odell Bradley and Chris Sanders paced IUPUI with 21 points apiece and Josh Mullins had 15 points, six boards and six assists in the win. Bradley got 22 points and six rebounds from Phillip Gilbert and current Indiana Pacer Danny Granger had 19 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Chiles leads this year's squad in scoring with a Summit League-high 18.1 points per game. Patton (13.0 ppg), McCallum (11.2 ppg) and Najee (10.8) are also scoring in double-figures after the season's first month. Barksdale has shown a do-it-all quality to his game, leading the team in rebounding (7.4 rpg), assists (3.5 apg), minutes (33.4 mpg) and blocked shots (16) from the lead guard position. The 6-foot-5 Lexington, Ky.-native missed nearly all of last season to a multitude of injuries.
Bradley will be the second of four Missouri Valley Conference foes on the Jaguars' schedule, as IUPUI will later play Indiana State and Drake. The Jaguars were unsuccessful against Evansville in the team's home opener, losing to the Purple Aces, 84-78.
