CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State's Paul McRoberts hit a corner three with 36 seconds to play to force overtime and the host Redhawks outscored IUPUI 11-7 in the extra period to claim an 83-79 victory inside the Show Me Center on Monday (Dec. 23) night.

"I'm very impressed, I'm proud and continue to see so many positives," IUPUI Head Coach Todd Howard said. "This is 15 games, 10 away from home and today may have been our best outing. SEMO will have a historical year - that's another NCAA (Tournament) team.

"We were a stop away in both games from beating them. We made them miss enough, but the second chance points on the road is tough."

Sophomore Marcellus Barksdale posted his third straight double-double with a career-high 22 points and 12 boards and senior center Mitch Patton registered his fifth career double-double with 16 points and 13 caroms. Junior guard Ian Chiles hit for double-digits for the 16th straight time, scoring 20 and classmate Khufu Najee pumped in 12 points off the bench.

"Marcellus, Ian and Mitch were so, so good today," Howard said. "Their grit and fire were on display."

Jarekious Bradley led all players with 27 points and 10 boards and Tyler Stone added 15 points and 15 rebounds.

IUPUI was seemingly clicking on all cylinders and built a 55-42 lead with 9:53 left after Najee hit a pair of free throws. In a matter of moments, the game went from possibly being a runaway to an all out dogfight as the Redhawks put up a quick 10-2 run, including treys from Jamaal Calvin and Stone.

After not committing a turnover in the first half, the Jaguars' second half ball handling woes helped SEMO work back into the game as IUPUI gave up a six-point lead in the final two minutes. Najee put the Jaguars in front 72-66 with 2:02 left, but Bradley countered with a trey.

Barksdale missed a contested runner with 79 seconds left and Najee was immediately called for a foul on the rebound, giving Calvin two shots. The Jaguars dodged a bullet when the SEMO guard missed both tries, but IUPUI was empty on the next possession when Chiles missed a three with the shot clock winding down. This time, SEMO cashed in on McRoberts' wide open triple from the corner.

McRoberts, a wide receiver on the SEMO (8-4) football team who joined the hoops squad earlier this week, made the most of his season debut, sinking his only field goal of the night to knot the score at 72 all.

On the ensuing possession, Barksdale dribbled out most of the clock before driving into the lane and drawing iron on a short pull-up jumper. Bradley grabbed the rebound with four seconds left and aired out an outlet pass to Stone streaking the other way, but the SEMO big man missed on a layup as time expired, sending the game to overtime.

IUPUI (4-11) never trailed in regulation, but immediately fell behind 75-72 in the extra period when Calvin opened with a three-point play. The Jaguars were forced to play catch-up for the final 4:45 of the overtime period and never came all the way back.

Chiles got the Jaguars within one at 75-74 when he hit a tough layup in traffic, but SEMO answered with a pair of Lucas Nutt free throws. The hosts went in front by five when Bradley putback a Stone miss along the baseline, but Chiles answered again with layup from the left side.

The Jaguars got a key defensive stop when Nutt misfired on a three, but Chiles missed a potential game-tying three from the top of the key with 24 seconds left. SEMO hit four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.

After slow starts had derailed the Jaguars' efforts in two of the past three games, IUPUI opened Monday's game with an 8-0 run, capped by a Barksdale putback of a Patton miss. SEMO eventually pulled even at 15 all on a Tyler Stone tip-in of his own miss at the 7:23 mark of the first half, but the Jaguars responded with an 8-0 run. Barksdale began the run with a pair of free throws and Patton scored on a left-handed hook on the next trip.

Najee collected a steal and converted the turnover into point, dropping in a 12-footer with just over six minutes left before the break. Patton capped the run with a right-handed hook, prompting a SEMO timeout. The two teams traded baskets over the final five minutes, giving IUPUI a 37-29 lead at the break.

IUPUI finished the game shooting 41 percent from the field while limiting SEMO to just 37 percent from the floor. However, SEMO rebounded 16 of its own misses, leading to 17 second chance points.

The Jaguars were brilliant from the foul line, hitting 25-of-26 (96.2 percent) attempts, with the lone miss coming from Barksdale with 2:47 left in regulation after IUPUI had made 23 tries to start the game. Chiles was 8-of-8 and Najee was 6-of-6 to key the team's efforts.

With the win, SEMO claimed a home-and-home sweep of the Jaguars this season, having beaten IUPUI in Indianapolis on Nov. 16 of this season. Monday's loss was the Jags' fourth straight after opening the month with three consecutive wins.

"This stretch at Terre Haute and at SEMO caps off an unreal schedule we have encountered," Howard said. "To answer the bell today and play with that IQ, resolve and unity was unreal. We've played a ton (of games)."

IUPUI will return home for a season-long four-game homestand, beginning with a regionally televised game against Drake on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 2:00 p.m. in The Jungle.
