INDIANAPOLIS - Junior guard
Ian Chiles scored 18 of his team-high 22 points in the first half to lead four Jaguars in double-digits as IUPUI coasted to a 94-72 victory over Cincinnati Christian University on Tuesday (Dec. 10) night in The Jungle. Sophomore
Marcellus Barksdale scored 14 of his career-high 18 in the second half and both
Mitch Patton and Ja'Rob McCallum finished with 11 apiece.
The win was the Jaguars' third straight, including two straight inside The Jungle.
CCU's Mike Hill led all players with 27 points on 10-of-11 from the foul line and Kenny Gaynor closed with 18 points and six boards.
IUPUI (4-7) dominated the game on the interior, outscoring the Eagles 48-26 in the paint and outrebounding the guests 41-27.
The Jaguars got off to a sluggish start, finding themselves tied with the guests at 15 all less than eight minutes in, primarily due to CCU's D.J. McCommons connecting on three early treys. Chiles continued to assert himself offensively, spearheading an 11-2 run that gave the Jaguars a 34-21 lead at the 5:32 mark of the first half. The run began on a Chiles pull-up jumper and gained steam when
Khufu Najee hit #P.J. Hubert# for a wing three in transition.
Chiles then played a role in IUPUI's next six points, driving from the wing for a dunk and then setting up a
Donovan Gibbs jumper. He capped the run with an easy layup after weaving his way through the CCU defense.
"I always try to come out aggressive," Chiles said. "Games like this, the starters don't expect to play too many minutes. I played a few more minutes tonight than what I expected, but I definitely wanted to come out aggressive and help us get the win."
IUPUI finalized its best offensive half of the season with a
Justus Stanback dunk at the final horn, sending the Jaguars to the break with a 51-35 advantage. The Jaguars shot 61.1 percent in the first half en route to the 16-point advantage.
"I thought we played really well in the first half," IUPUI Head Coach
Todd Howard said. "We shoot 61 percent, get 10 assists, hold them to just one offensive rebound and outrebound them 23-10. They hit some threes to keep them in it, but I didn't want to belabor that. I wanted the focus to be more on what we did well.
"We've said all along, we wanted this to be about us. We mixed up our defenses and took a look at some things (defensively). Some things we liked and some things we didn't necessarily like. But that's why we wanted to play a team like this. They're a high octane, high possession team that scores almost 90 points a game. We knew they'd challenge us defensively."
The Jaguars were never seriously threatened in the second half, although CCU (6-4) cut the Jaguars' lead back to 63-52 with 13:09 to play after a quick 6-0 run. Gaynor scored all six points during the burst, including a tough fadeaway from the left side.
In the second half, it was seemingly Barksdale that answered the bell when needed. The 6-foot-5 point guard scored nine straight points, mostly from in close, helping push IUPUI's lead out to 18 with under nine minutes left. The lead grew to 24 late in the game on a Chiles drive before both sides cleared their benches for the final minutes.
Chiles hit 10-of-18 shots and handed out four assists in 35 minutes work. Barksdale was 7-of-11 overall and Patton hit 5-of-7 shots as IUPUI closed at 57.4 percent. Gibbs came off the bench to finish with eight points and a season-high 11 boards.
"(Not starting) was hard for me," Gibbs said. "I just want to do anything to help my team win, whether it's rebound, defend or hit shots. Now I just try to come in with a chip on my shoulder and make plays."
All 11 Jaguars in uniform cracked the scoring column and 10 different players had at least one board.
"More than anything, I was pleased with the contributions from everyone," Howard said. "Everyone who played, played a role in this win. I thought Justus did a great job, Khufu, who's usually a recipient, was more of a facilitator tonight. Ian was really good and Marcellus did a little bit of everything.
"You look up and down the stat sheet and everyone did their part."
The Jaguars finished with a 30-0 edge in bench scoring. IUPUI's bench came in averaging just under 17 points per contest.
The Jaguars are back in action on Saturday (Dec. 14) afternoon when they head north to take on Marquette inside the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee at 2:00 p.m. Central (3:00 Eastern).
