INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time this season, the IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete at home when they welcome, Valparaiso, Butler, and Wright State to the IUPUI Natatorium for dual meets on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, Nov. 8, the Jags will take on Valparaiso and Butler (women), before concluding the weekend against Wright State on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Crusaders own 0-2 records on both the men's and the women's side, the Butler women are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiates, and the Wright State men and women are both an identical 5-1.
"We are on the opposite ends of the spectrum with some of these teams. I believe this may be Wright State's fifth weekend this fall with a meet and it is only our second," head coach Matt Bos said. "We have put a big focus on training this fall and that may hurt us a little when it comes to racing, but we are excited to get in our home pool against some really good competition. I'm looking forward to seeing who will step up and race well."
IUPUI last competed back on Oct. 25-26, against Summit League foe Eastern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago. The Jags opened their season with a win over Eastern Illinois on Oct. 25, before coming back with wins over the Panthers and the Flames the next afternoon.
On the women's side, IUPUI picked up four victories on against EIU and UIC, including a pair from
Margaret Barber in the 500 free and the 1,000 free. Barber already held the school record in the 1,000 free going into the meet, but she started her season on a strong note by posting the fourth-best time in school history at 10:34.53.
The other two wins came from
Madison Taylor in the 100 free and
Alexus Laird in the 100 back, but
Natalie Trout also made her way onto the school's Top 10 list in the 400 IM clocking a time of 4:41.65 – the ninth-best mark in school history.
For the men, five straight wins against UIC and EIU down the stretch allowed IUPUI to cruise in its opening weekend.
Tony Carroll led the way with two victories, but Bos was able to get a majority of his young team in the pool for the first time and give them their first taste of collegiate swimming.
Of his newcomers,
Daniel Heringer put together the most impressive swim of the day in the 100 fly timing in at 51.39, moving him into fourth in the school record books.
Friday's contest against the Crusaders and Bulldogs is set to begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday's meet against the Raiders will begin at noon.
