LAS VEGAS - The IUPUI basketball team will look to cap their two-game Sin City swing on a high note when the Jaguars take on Chattanooga (2-5) in the final game of the 2013 Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational on Friday (Nov. 29). Friday's game is slated to tip-off at 12:30 p.m. Pacific (3:30 Eastern) inside Orleans Arena (6,000) on the south end of the Vegas strip. The game is expected to be heard on both WNDE 1260 AM and on the free iHeartRadio app as Will Flemming (pxp) calls the action from courtside.
Friday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
IUPUI (1-6) hopes that Tryptophan isn't an issue on Friday as the Jaguars' come off a season-low 54 point output in Thursday's Thanksgiving Day 61-54 loss to Gardner-Webb. The Jaguars trailed by as many as 18 in the second half before closing within five on two separate occasions in the final 10 minutes. However, Head Coach
Todd Howard's team was unable to get any closer than two possessions in the second half.
Junior guard
Ian Chiles had his third 20-plus scoring game of the season with a game-high 22 points and senior center
Mitch Patton finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Naji Hibbert led GWU with 15 points.
Despite winning the glass and outscoring Gardner-Webb in second chance points and points off turnovers, IUPUI shot a season-low 31.7 percent from the field and was just 4-of-16 (25 percent) from three-point range. The Jaguars were also perfect from the free throw line on Thursday for just the sixth time in the program's Division I history, hitting all 10 tries. However, it was a near eight minute scoreless spell in the first half that doomed the Jaguars as their 11-10 lead was flipped into a 21-11 deficit in the middle of the first stanza. After trailing by 13 at the break, Gardner-Webb pushed the lead out to 18 early in the second half before the Jaguars battled back.
A pair of subs, Ja'Rob McCallum and
Justus Stanback, helped fuel the comeback, with Stanback scoring seven second half points and McCallum finishing with four points and four boards. Stanback is averaging 9.0 points per game over his last two outings, having made 8-of-13 shots in those two losses.
Chattanooga lost to Morehead State 88-75 on Thursday as both teams are seeking their first win of the Las Vegas Invite. The Mocs opened play with losses at Nevada and UCLA in the campus site rounds. Z. Mason leads UTC in scoring (16.3 ppg), rebounding (6.9 rpg) and blocked shots (13) in the season's early going. The 6-foot-6 Mason began his career on the Ole Miss football team before transferring to Chattanooga prior to the 2011-12 season. The guard tandem of Gee McGhee (15.0 ppg, 23 ast) and Greg Pryor (11.4 ppg, 24 ast, 14 stl) round out the team's double-digit scorers.
Chattanooga leads the SoCon in scoring at 85.0 points per game, but are 0-4 away from home this season. The Mocs' two wins have come against non-Division I foes including a season-opening 119-56 victory over Covenant and a 108-51 victory over Montreat on Nov. 16.
