INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team will open play in the 2013 Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational when the Jaguars head north to Northwestern (2-2) on Friday (Nov. 22) night. The game is slated to tip at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and can be heard on WNDE 1260 AM as Will Flemming (pxp) is on the call. The game can also be seen on the Big Ten Digital Network.Â
IUPUI is slated to continue play in the Las Vegas Invite at Missouri on Monday (Nov. 25) before playing back-to-back days inside Orleans Arena on Thursday and Friday.
IUPUI (1-3) is coming off an emphatic 88-53 victory over IU Northwest on Tuesday night as the bench exploded for a 51-point night in the win. Freshman
Justus Stanback led five Jags in double-digits with 15 points off the bench, becoming the first rookie to lead the Jags in scoring in a game for the first time since Dec. 16, 2011.
Khufu Najee,
Ian Chiles and Ja'Rob McCallum all finished with 11 points each and
Mitch Patton chipped in 10 points, seven boards and four blocked shots. Meanwhile, sophomore point guard
Marcellus Barksdale continued to be the ultimate do-it-all guy, closing with a career-high 10 rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocked shots.
Defensively, IUPUI held IUN to just 24.2 percent shooting, marking the lowest mark by a Jaguars' foe during the program's Division I era (1998-present). IUN hit just 5-of-31 (16.1 percent) attempts in the first half before warming up to shoot 31 percent in the second half.
The Jaguars' bench carried much of the scoring load with
P.J. Hubert tallying nine points and redshirt freshman
Elijah Ray posting a career-high eight points. Both
Cortell Busby and
Josh James added four points apiece.Â
IUPUI is 1-0 all-time against Northwestern, having defeated the Wildcats during the 2002-03 season. After losing back-to-back games to Creighton and Furman in Kansas City, the Jaguars trekked to Chicago for a third game in as many days and ultimately squeaked out a 56-53 win for the program's only-ever win over a Big Ten opponent. Josh Murray led IUPUI with 17 points (6-11 FG, 5-7 FT) and 12 rebounds and Antoine Lewis scored 14 (7-9 FG) off the bench. Current Associate Head Coach
Matt Crenshaw had six points (2-3 FG, 2-2 FT) off the bench in that win. Jitim Young led four NU players in double-digits with 16 points (5-11 FG, 1-3 3's, 5-11 FT), but turned it over six times. IUPUI finished that season by making the program's only-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.Â
This year's Northwestern squad is off to a 2-2 start under first-year Head Coach Chris Collins. The Wildcats claimed wins over Eastern Illinois and UIC while dropping decisions to Stanford and Illinois State. The last time out, NU went on the road and blitzed UIC, 93-58 for their largest true road win since 1944. Fifth-year senior swingman Drew Crawford leads Northwestern in scoring (17.8 ppg) and is tied with Sanjay Lumpkin for the team lead in rebounding at 7.5 rpg. JerShon Cobb is the team's top assist man (14) and is averaging 13.8 points per game. Dave Sobolewski is averaging 11.3 points per game and Tre Demps is the team's top reserve, averaging 10.0 points per game in four appearances off the Northwestern bench.
