INDIANAPOLIS - On the heels of back-to-back narrow home losses, the IUPUI basketball team will look to get on the winning side of the ledger when the Jaguars host IU-Northwest (2-3) inside the Jungle on Tuesday (Nov. 19) night at 7:00 p.m.. IUPUI (0-3) dropped a 76-68 decision to Southeast Missouri on Saturday, despite getting 46 points from the starting backcourt of
Ian Chiles and
Khufu Najee. Chiles scored 15 of his 24 in the first half while Najee pumped in 15 of his 22 in the second half. IUPUI held a slim three-point lead with 4:08 to play after Najee knocked in a 19-footer, but 15-2 SEMO run gave the visiting Redhawks the lead for good. SEMO's Darrian Gray hit a go-ahead trey with 2:07 remaining and Tyler Stone iced the win with a three from the top of the key with 1:09 left.
IUPUI's only basket in the final four minutes was a Chiles 24-footer from the left wing with 11 seconds left with the Jaguars trailing 75-68.
Chiles hit 8-of-16 shots and 6-of-7 free throws for his second straight game of 20 points or better. Najee finished with 8-of-11 makes from the floor, including hitting 3-of-4 for his career-high 22 points. Senior center
Mitch Patton, who missed the Evansville game, came with 13 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes work. Senior forward
Donovan Gibbs added seven points and three assists and sophomore point guard
Marcellus Barksdale had a career-high nine rebounds and seven assists.
The Jaguars' bench was held scoreless, combining to play just 11 minutes total.
Stone led SEMO (2-1) with 22 points and 14 rebounds in his first game of the season and freshman Antonius Cleveland had 15 points and four assists.
Through three games, Chiles leads the team in scoring (22.0 ppg) and threes made (7), while Patton checks in at 19.5 points and 8.0 boards per game. Najee (14.3 ppg) and Gibbs (11.0 ppg) are also averaging double-digits while Barksdale has embraced the lead guard role, averaging 5.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in the season's early going. Justus Stanback has been the team's top reserve, averaging 2.7 points per game.
IUPUI is 10-1 all-time against IUN and has won seven straight in a series that dates back to 1972. The first nine meetings in the series came prior to IUPUI's move to Division I play in 1998 while the last two occurred in 2010 and 2012, respectively. John Hart led the way with 18 points and five rebounds and Chiles finished with 15 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Lyonell Gaines closed with eight points and 19 rebounds (10 offensive) in the victory. Patton missed the game due to injury.
Junior guard Brandon Grubl is IUN's top returner from a year ago and scored 21 against the Jaguars a year ago.
