INDIANAPOLIS - Junior guard
Ian Chiles and
Khufu Najee combined to score 46 points, but visiting Southeast Missouri used a late 12-0 run to overtake the Jaguars as IUPUI fell, 76-68. Tyler Stone led the victors with 22 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots and hit a pair of late threes to help send his team to the win.
For the second straight game, IUPUI (0-3) climbed out of a double-digit hole to take a late lead, but was unable to sustain over the closing minutes. IUPUI trailed by 10 in the first half and still faced a nine-point deficit early in the second half before coming all the way back to take a 59-56 advantage on a Najee wing three with 8:58 to play. The Jaguars relinquished the lead on a transition layup and Nino Johnson jumper, but
Donovan Gibbs returned the lead to the IUPUI side on a 17-foot baseline jumper.
The Jaguars lead grew to three on a Najee 19-footer, but Stone immediately tied the score by swishing a trey from the top of the key off a Lucas Nutt feed. After a SEMO (2-1) timeout, senior
Mitch Patton put the Jaguars in front with a left-handed layup on the low block at the 3:27 mark. However, Southeast Missouri would score the game's next 12 points and not allow the Jaguars a field goal until Chiles hit a meaningless three with 11 seconds remaining.
Jarekious Bradley began the run with a putback of a Darrian Gray miss, marking the sixth tie of the game. After
Marcellus Barksdale misfired on a 16-footer, Gray stroked an open three to put SEMO in front for good with 2:07 left. IUPUI missed a pair of attempts on the ensuing possesion and Stone all but buried the Jaguars when he drilled an open three with 69 seconds left.
SEMO hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Antonius Cleveland finished with 15 points for the Redhawks and Gray added 11 points and five steals. Nutt, the son of Head Coach Dickie Nutt, had nine points and six assists from the lead guard position.
Chiles was an efficient 8-of-16 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the foul line, while also grabbing five boards in the loss. It was his second straight 20-plus point scoring effort, coming off a career-high 28-point night against Evansville on Tuesday. Najee was 8-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three in 39 minutes work. Patton also finished in double-digits with 13 points and six rebounds, earning his 27th career double-digit scoring game. Barksdale had a career-high nine rebounds and seven assists from the point guard position.
As a team, IUPUI shot 48.1 percent from the floor, but struggled at the free throw line again, making 11-of-16 (68.6 percent) attempts. After going 10-of-11 in the first half, IUPUI was just 1-of-5 in the second half.
Turnovers plagued the Jaguars in the first half, with 12 of the Jagaurs' miscues coming in the opening 20 minutes. SEMO surged out to a 23-14 lead, using its athleticism to get in the passing lanes and force IUPUI turnovers. Cleveland had two transition dunks in the game's first five minutes, the first coming on the first possession after he collected a steal near midcourt. The Jaguars trailed by as many as 10 on four different occasions in the first half, before a Najee five-point mini-run cut the lead back to five. The Jags went into halftime down 42-35.
IUPUI finished the game with a 17-12 advantage in points off turnovers, despite turning it over four more times than SEMO. The Redhawks' bench outscored the Jaguars' bench 12-0 as IUPUI went almst exclusively with its starting five for the second half.
The same two teams will meet again in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Dec. 23 in the Jaguars' final game before the Christmas holiday.
