ELMHURST, Ill. – For the first time this season, IUPUI swept The Summit League Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week as
Tony Carroll and
Alexus Laird claimed the weekly honors.
This is Carroll's second career Swimmer of the Week honor and Laird's first.
The women's team is coming off a week in which it went 3-0 with wins over Butler, Valparaiso and Wright State. Laird posted six victories in seven events throughout the weekend, including three individual wins.
On Friday against Valparaiso and Butler, the Kokomo, Ind.-native won the 100 free in 53.78, which ranks ninth in the league, and was second in the 100 free (24.41), tying for sixth-best time in the league this season. The following day vs. Wright State, she swept the backstroke events winning the 100 back in 57.53 and the 200 back in 2:07.27. Her 100 back time is third-best in the league, while her 200 back time ranks fifth. She also was a part of the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay that won both days.
Carroll recorded a trio of individual and relay event wins in a win over Valparaiso and a loss to Wright State. In the win over the Crusaders he posted first-place finishes in the 200 free and 200 medley relay. He won the 200 free in 1:42.24, the second-fastest league time this season. He came back the next day to earn a pair of individual and relay victories against Wright State. The Granger, Ind.-native won the 100 back in 52.01 and the 500 free in 4:42.66, both ranking fourth in the league. He was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team, which set a school record with a time of 1:33.85, and the first place 400 free relay squad (3:07.98). Both relay teams recorded the second-fastest league times this season.
Both the men's and the women's teams have a weekend away from competitions before returning to action Nov. 22-24, when the Jags host the 2013 House of Champions Meet at the IUPUI Natatorium.
