INDIANAPOLIS - This one looked to be another long scoreless match before Lance Davis knocked in the deciding goal three minutes into overtime to give the Jaguars (1-8-3) their first win of the season. The match almost did not happen however due to lightning in the area.

At 8:00 pm, the players had started warming up again after an hour-long delay. IUPUI seemed a step slower in the first half on the rain-soaked field. Neither team scored, but Omaha (2-7-1) outshot the Jaguars 15-2. The Mavericks defenders and midfielders constantly pressured the ball on defense and were able to keep the ball on the Jaguars side of the field. They had multiple opportunities to score off corner kicks, five compared to zero for the Jaguars, but never converted.

Despite Omaha's offensive onslaught, goalie Eduardo Cortes, who returned to the starting lineup tonight for the first time since September 22, kept the ball out of the net and the Jaguars came away with a 0-0 tie at half.

"We just have to believe," said coach Isang Jacob. "I told them we're gonna have our break."

The Jaguars came out in the second half and were able to control the ball much more effectively, but the break never came.

In the 55th minute, Ian Block dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box and hit a left-footed strike off the crossbar. The Jaguars would have another opportunity a minute later when Matt Grosey, the Omaha goalie, misplayed a corner kick. The ball landed inside the six-yard box, but there were no Jaguars around the ball and Omaha was able to clear it. In the 62nd minute, off another corner kick, defender Michael Sass leaned in for a header but did not get full contact. The ball bounced forward to Davis who spun around and hit a sweeping shot towards the left side of the goal. Grosey punched the ball away for a fantastic save to preserve the 0-0 tie.

The game seemed destined to be yet another long 0-0 tie, but just three minutes into overtime the Jaguars caught their break. Forward Ian Block chased down a long ball near the goal line, never panicked, and passed it into the box to Davis. He controlled the pass with his right foot, turned and knocked it in to the back right of the net with his left.

"I kind of got pushed over and just thought I'd stand back up and see what Block was gonna make of it," said Davis. "He put in a good ball and luckily I got a good touch. It was tough tonight to get a good touch on this wet surface, but I got a good one and just put it in the back corner."

Davis sprinted towards the bench, his teammates tackling him and making a pile. The game was over and the Jaguars recorded their first victory of the season.

The Jaguars moved to 1-0-1 in conference play with victory tonight while the Mavericks fell to 1-1. The Jaguars will travel to Denver to take on the Pioneers next Saturday at 9:00 p.m.
