SOUTH BEND, Ind. - IUPUI fifth-year senior standout Rachel Zajac broke a nearly 13-year old 5K record on Friday (Oct. 4), running the Notre Dame Invitational Gold Race in a time of 17:57.2. The St. John, Ind.-native broke the record by almost eight seconds, finishing the race in 13th of 212 runners. As a team, the Jaguars claimed a 16th place finish of 26 schools with a team score of 340.

Running her final collegiate 5K, Zajac set a goal of becoming the first IUPUI runner to ever break 18 minutes on Friday, especially given the flat terrain of the Notre Dame Golf Course. Despite the course steaming up after a pre-race rain soaking, the St. John, Ind.-native pulled it off, crushing her previous best time by 28 seconds.

IUPUI Hall of Famer Lyndsey Emerson held the previous school record, having run 18:05 at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships on Oct. 28, 2000.

Junior Jordan Hanaway and sophomore Leah Brooks followed up Zajac's effort with personal best times of 18:49.7 and 18:50.0, placing 60th and 61st, respectively. Hanaway's time was a new PR by 21 seconds while Brooks beat her previous best seven seconds.

Sophomore Lexi Hunt turned in a huge effort, covering the course in a time of 19:24.2, just two weeks after running in the open race at the Indiana Intercollegiates. Her time was a PR by 39 seconds and put her in 105th overall. Fifth-year senior Allie DeBaker capped the scoring five in a time of 19:24.6, placing 107th. Sophomore Julie Riggins crossed at 19:39.7 and freshman Ashley Mosley was the Jaguars' No. 7 runner at 20:04.0.

Southern Illinois won the Gold Race with 52 points and Grand Valley State was second with 63. IUPUI finished one point behind Eastern Michigan and 13 back of former Summit League foe UMKC. The Jaguars easily outdistanced in-state foe Indiana State by 50 points and a pair of Summit League opponents in IPFW and Western Illinois. UMKC's Courtney Frerichs won the race in a time of 17:18.2 and EMU's Victoria Voronko was second at 17:21.9.

In the open race, freshman Valeria Guzman paced IUPUI's six individual entries with a time of 19:27.6. Fellow freshman Mandy Campbell posted a time of 20:24.2.

The Jaguars will run again when they participate in the Oct. 18 Bradley Classic 6K race in Peoria, Ill..
