INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team was unable to muster much on the attack and saw visiting Oakland find the back of the net in the 56th minute as the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 decision to their former Summit League foe at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on a rainy, cold Tuesday (Oct. 22) night. OU's Kyla Kellerman scored the game's only goal, spoiling the Jaguars' 2013 home finale.
IUPUI had the better run of play in the game's early going, but was unable to capitalize on possessions deep in Oakland territory. Senior
Sarah Carlisle had an early shot deflected wide of target, resulting in an
Anna Rode corner kick.
Later, freshman
Tori Minnich hit a shot right at OU goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec in the seventh minute, only to see the Golden Grizzlies' net minder make the top.
IUPUI's (4-8-4) best scoring chance of the first half came in the 24th minute when the ball was played to Minnich at the right of the goal. The freshman forward continued working to her right to try and turn on her defender, but ended up firing just wide of target.
After a relatively tame first half, the Oakland (8-7-1) attack came out firing at backup goalkeeper
Nicole Kulovitz at the start of the second half. Kulovitz made three saves in the first five minutes of the second half, but OU's Kellerman finally broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute. She and Meghan Reynolds played a nifty game of give-and-go inside the left edge of the Jaguars' 18-yard box, resulting in Kellerman getting free in close. The OU striker put a composed attempt on frame, depositing her fifth score of the year.
IUPUI struggled in the attack in the second half, aside from a couple of flurries late in the match. In the 74th minute, junior
Taylor Heidorn had a shot knocked down, leading to a corner kick. On the ensuing corner,
Brenna Parks tried to get a shot through traffic, but had it fly well high of target.
Later, Heidorn and
Samantha Bathurst both had shots fly high of frame late in the match before the Golden Grizzlies ultimately drained the final minutes off the clock.
Oakland outshot IUPUI 17-12 overall and 10-2 on frame. Kulovitz made a season-high six saves in a busy second half after senior
Giselle Guzman made three saves in a scoreless first half.
IUPUI will return to Summit League action on Saturday, Oct. 26 when the Jaguars head west to take on Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill.. That match is slated to kickoff at 2:00 p.m. Eastern (1:00 p.m. Central).
